The extreme cold is not exactly welcome, but the precipitation is needed given the dry fall. As the maps illustrate, the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center outlooks strongly favor below normal temperatures across the Northern Plains for much of February. Also, the outlooks...

  • AARP Scam Alert: Scammers steal tax refunds

    Feb 5, 2018

Another tax season is here and that means another round of tax scams, including tax identity theft, are sure to follow. Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to file a tax return and claim a fraudulent tax refund. These phony returns are usually e-filed early in the tax season because e-filed returns get faster refunds. A scammer hopes to get a refund check or direct deposit to an account they control before a taxpayer files a legitimate return. But you won’t know something is wrong until you file your tax r...

  • Backyard immigration lesson

    Susan Stamper Brown|Feb 5, 2018

The perky little chickadee with a black cap and deformed beak that I’d been trying to keep alive died a few days ago, the same day the 7.9 magnitude earthquake jolted me and fellow Alaskans out of bed. I knew it was only a matter of time. It mattered not that I’d been doing everything possible to accommodate the cute little guy’s needs by pulverizing nuts and seeds to make it easier for him to swoop up and swallow food with his crossed-sickle beak. Even without deformities, it’s tough for these...

  • President's Point: February 2018

    Calvin J. Packard|Feb 5, 2018

This is used from my February 2017 Presidents Point, yet it is still relevant.   February is the shortest month, so I chose a short story to emphasize my point for this month: communication.   This story starts in Somalia on December 4, 1992 when U.S. President George H. Bush ordered American forces into Somalia. The units landed, and there were questions about the use of force and what our forces could and could not do. The question and answer session lead to a policy known as the rules of eng...

  • Letter to the Editor - February 5, 2018

    Feb 5, 2018

Dear Editor, With the passage of the Tax Cut & Jobs Act in December, Congress and the Administration promised historic tax relief. Unfortunately, it looks as if a lot of farmers won’t receive tax relief, given the current situation with Sec. 199, a tax deduction that is essential for farmers and farmer-owned cooperatives. In the rush to pass tax legislation, Sec. 199 – the Domestic Production Activities Deduction – was eliminated. Realizing the situation before the law was passed, Sen. Hoeven included a new provision, Sec. 199a, which prove...

    Reverend Rick Loewen|Feb 5, 2018

I will never forget when our gracious Heavenly Father blessed my wife and I with our firstborn, a blue-eyed little girl. Even though I am alergic to apples, my little girl was the apple, and still is, the apple of my eye. It was during seminary that my daughter was born, and we had just been asked to pastor my first church. Besides the excitement we had over our first born, the members of this loving and compassionate church, were excited to have a baby in their congregation. She was the only one and was dearly cared for by all. On Christmas...
