    Amy Wobbema|Jul 27, 2020

A fixture in the local agribusiness community is slated to close if a buyer can't be found soon. Last week, Chet Pollert announced to his employees and customers that he intends to retire, and he plans to liquidate the business assets of G & R Grain and Feed over the next couple of months should no one step forward to succeed him as owner. G & R Grain and Feed was established by longtime New Rockford resident Theodore "Ted" Gathman in 1978. Gathman purchased the facility from Peavey Company,...

  • North American Bison, LLC manager recognized

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 27, 2020

One of North American Bison's longest-tenured staff members has been named the Chamber's Employee of the Month. Plant Manager Rodney Swart was recognized with the award on Wednesday morning. Although he works much more closely with staff than he does customers, Swart does answer customer questions as needed and greets ranchers who haul their animals to the plant for processing. And it appears the person who nominated him sought to recognize him simply for his work ethic, as the anonymous source...

  • Keeping up to date on COVID-19

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 27, 2020

We are embarking on our fifth month of learning to live with the coronavirus, and it hasn't got any easier. Regardless of individual health or political beliefs, we have learned that living with uncertainty is difficult. Many would even say stressful. Here in Eddy County, residents have experienced very little of the impact of COVID-19 and its potential for community spread. Thus, we have been living our lives with a little more care and caution. Through the state, both testing and positive...

  • Grandparent scam is back with a twist

    Jul 27, 2020

Con artists will go to great lengths to get between you and your money. Sadly, this includes taking advantage of your love for your family. Scammers are putting a new twist on an old scam that targets grandparents’ hearts and wallets. Scammers contact grandparents, claiming to be their grandchild or calling on behalf of their grandchild. With a nod to the pandemic, they will explain your grandchild fell ill and was rushing to the hospital and wrecked his car — and possibly even hurt someone — and is now in jail. They will ask you to send money...

"Those are my getaways where I get away from the farm, from the kids and...

  • Do you have a favorite heat wave story?

    Danny Tyree|Jul 27, 2020

Much of the nation is experiencing a prolonged heat wave, so of course your humble columnist counterintuitively conjures up WARM MEMORIES to comfort himself. When I was in college, I sometimes supplemented my income by helping my late father with deliveries for Easy Pay Tire Store (the tires-and-appliances store where he worked for the Ritter family). One delivery should have been routine (installing an air conditioner for a countryfied elderly couple I had known since my high school job at...

  • Perpetual anger no help amid pandemic

    Tom Purcell|Jul 27, 2020

Good grief: Apparently, America has yet to move past the anger phase regarding COVID-19. In 1969, you see, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross described five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. According to Fast Company, researchers from Singapore, China, Australia and Switzerland analyzed more than 20 million Twitter posts from 7 million users in 170 countries to gauge people’s state of mind regarding the coronavirus. Using keywords such as “Wuhan” and “corona,” they found...

  • Letter to the Editor: July 27, 2020

    Nick Archuletta|Jul 27, 2020

No one wants to return to in-person teaching and learning more than North Dakota’s professional educators. The women and men who have dedicated their lives to educating our future know better than anyone about the physical, intellectual, and psychological benefits that in-person instruction affords our children. But no matter how anxious we are to return to the classroom and meet face to face with our students, we must do so only when we have mitigated the risk to the health of students and staff to the greatest extent possible. In leaving t...

  • Living on Purpose: The constant need for spiritual discernment

    Billy Holland|Jul 27, 2020

Within the Christian life, there are many pillars of truth which are critical to our spiritual development and one of these is discernment. The word may have several meanings, but mostly it's associated with having spiritual sensitivity. Within the Biblical view it is used to identify whether something is good or evil and being able to interpret and understand God's voice. You see, we cannot hear what he is saying if we are not walking close to him or even aware of his presence. It's elementary...

  • Sermonette: July 27, 2020

    Pastor Jeff Halvorson|Jul 27, 2020

There was a television program some time ago, reruns continue today. “Fraiser” was based on a psychiatrist who had given up private practice and now had a radio program where people would call in with problems of various levels of seriousness, though usually intended to be humorous. On one particular episode, the psychiatrist was told that he had to have a little song to be played as an intro to his program. Eventually, at the program’s ending, what they came up with was if you wanted help, no matter what your problem, if you wanted help,...

Anyone wishing to use gas lights should have their piping done while the plumbers were in town to avoid paying more later. The plant would open about August 1. Dear Savvy Senior, Can you offer some good stretching tips for seniors who are staying home during the pandemic? I’ve gotten so stiff and achy in recent years that I have a hard time doing basic activities like bending over to tie my shoes. Stiff as a Board Dear Stiff, Of all possible exercises, stretching tends to be the most neglected, yet nothing is more vital to keeping an aging body limber and injury-free. As we age, our muscles naturally lose their elasticity if you’re not active, whi...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Worth A Second Look

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 27, 2020

The July 6 installment of Archival Anecdotes featured two photos, both representative of a New Rockford parade celebration sometime in the early half of the 20th century. However, the two photos were not from the same event as the article implied. Two readers submitted evidence and offered insight to the clues they had used to draw their conclusions. In college, I had a professor of anthropology who blatantly told me, "You will not make a good archaeologist. You get too caught up in the story...

  • Our Outdoors: Practice makes perfectly okay

    Nick Simonson|Jul 27, 2020

There are few hunters that I envy. Content with the options I have close to home for the limited species I pursue each fall with the time I can muster, I enjoy the success and adventures of my friends and relish hearing their stories from far off places or lucky tag draws when we meet up for a reunion around a summer campfire or when hunched over a set of ice holes in the winter following the season. Even complete strangers who email me out of the blue with their tales light up my screen with te...
