At their regular meeting on Tuesday, June 6, Eddy County commissioners decided not to reapply for a federal grant that pays for the county's emergency manager. The decision came after the county’s current part-time emergency manager, Lisa Thompson, presented commissioners with the grant’s new requirements, which she believes go too far. “We’re all being painted with the same brush," she said, “and it just doesn’t fit us.” The grant in question is the Emergency Management Performance G...

North Dakota residents Shayla and Nikki lost the prime of their youth to pimps who sold them as sexual commodities across the country. To this day they struggle with the trauma inflicted upon them by being trafficked, but through programs here in the state they are dealing with the aftermath and raising awareness of the plight of others caught in similar situations. For both, some of the biggest hurdles came after their ordeals. Held against their will, fear of harm to their children kept them from snitching on their captors. Even when arrested...

“Mom, wanna be on my BeReal?” my 16-year-old daughter asked me one day. “Um, sure,” I replied sheepishly, because frankly I didn’t even know what she was talking about. She told me to look at her camera phone, and she quickly snapped a photo of us. I didn’t really give it much more thought at the time. Since then, my husband and I have made guest appearances in both our daughters’ BeReal feeds several times. What is BeReal, you ask? Well, it’s just another social media app that all the kids ar...
Oil money, oil money. When you have as much of it as Saudi Arabia has, it can buy a lot of things – including a sacred American sports institution like the PGA. As all of us hackers know, the PGA Tour shocked the golf world this week by announcing it will merge with the LIV Tour, the upstart Saudi-backed professional golf tour that the PGA has been in a bitter legal fight with since last year. The details of the nearly $3 billion deal are still unknown. So is the impact it will have on the w...

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable; it keeps no record of wrongs; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a Love is oh so lovely Most of us recognize this passage as the most common Scripture read at weddings. And rightfully so because it is so fitting. Weddings are lovely, and so is love, as described he...
God did that Within the unlimited amount of evidence to prove that God is real and the Creator of all things, there is no greater example than the sun, Earth, and moon. The average person does not wake up in the morning and rush to the window to see if the sun is going to rise, or if the earth is being drawn into a black hole. Neither would anyone jump up and down just to make sure the levels of gravity did not change during the night or if the oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide levels are...
The ladybug is a gardener's best friend. This beneficial insect is like the sheriff in our gardens, protecting our plants from aphids and other bad bugs. Ladybugs have voracious appetites, too. One ladybug can eat 50 aphids a day and over 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. Although ladybugs are our friends, don't buy them for your garden. You will be wasting your money. There are dozens of different species of ladybugs (more properly called lady beetles) in the Dakotas. The most commonly sold lady be...
