  • People need a sense of belonging

    LLoyd Omdahl|Dec 30, 2019

One Sunday morning the pastor said that “everyone has a need to belong.” He was confirming God’s earlier statement that it was not good for man to be alone. That profound observation stuck with me because it is so true. However, we have not thought about seriously addressing this truism. The time has come to acknowledge that we are a nation of communities in which millions of Americans don’t belong. It seems that the most intelligent thing we can do is to build stronger communities in which ever...

  • Political rhetoric speaks volumes about impeachment

    Rich Manieri|Dec 30, 2019

If you observe politics the way I do – as one stares at a five-car pileup on the freeway – your gaping will always be rewarded. The House voted on Wednesday to impeach President Trump, but the rhetoric in the run-up to impeachment said a lot about the process. If you enjoy political hyperbole, you weren’t disappointed. During the debate on articles of impeachment, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) searched for analogies to make a point about the injustice of Trump’s impeachment and came up with a doozy. “Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus...

Joseph, Mary and Jesus are making the long walk back from Egypt, intending to make their home in Bethlehem, but their plans change. In the fifth dream recorded in the first two chapters of Matthew an angel warns Joseph that Archelaus, the son of Herod, now reigns in his father’s place, and he’s just as dangerous. Take the child to Galilee, the angel tells Joseph. So faithful Joseph avoids Bethlehem and continues north to Nazareth. And that’s where Jesus grows up, fulfilling the prophecy Matthew quotes, “He will be called a Nazorean” (Matthew...

    Dr. Billy Holland|Dec 30, 2019

The development of these courageous men and women comes not only with many hours of on the job experience, but also years of classroom instruction and continuing education. Just as in college, instructors teach with PowerPoint...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Say Cheese!

    Rachel Brazil|Dec 30, 2019

When faced with choosing which artifacts to feature first in this column, it seems worthwhile to consider the camera. After all, photographic technology has changed immensely since the late 1800s. Perhaps the most important aspect of the camera is the photograph it produces. In fact, the Eddy County Museum collection includes more than 350 historic photographic images. Chances are, a good number of the photos within the collection were taken with a Brownie box camera. Pictured at right, these...
