  • What it Takes: Counting votes

    Oakley Brazil|Oct 26, 2020

I have lived through two Presidential elections, but this is the first one that I will know anything about. This month I agreed to learn and write about the election taking place on November 3. I'm already learning more than I thought I could imagine. Just last night, I saw a mail-in ballot for the first time. Let me tell you, it was not very simple. There are many names, and each candidate stands for something different. Voting is a big responsibility, especially in knowing who to vote for. I...

The funds to sustain their efforts come from donations, and for that they couldn't be more thankful. In fact, more than 260 individuals and organizations have...

  • Nothing is Normal, Everything is Fine.

    Rachel Brazil|Oct 26, 2020

I check my temperature at least three times a day. Maybe this is because I am a woman in my late 30s who runs a bit warm anyway. Far more times than not, the thermometer gives a normal reading. If anyone is nearby, I will proudly announce, “It says I’m normal!” Then I laugh wildly because I know what a joke that is. 227 days have passed since the novel coronavirus altered our sense of reality and put a proverbial collar on our lives. We have adjusted and readjusted our outlooks as well as our priorities and behaviors. Nothing is normal, but eve...

  • Team Purple

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 26, 2020

The media is not the enemy. Law enforcement officers are not the enemy. Christians are not the enemy. President Trump is also not the enemy, nor is he some special kind of brave politician fighting for America. He fights for the people who support him, not for his enemies. Biden is much the same. I have heard from Americans on all ends of the political spectrum who are plugging their noses while they fill out their ballots this election season. While it seems that people think that 2020 is "the...

    Mindy Meier|Oct 26, 2020

Nearing the end of a two-week quarantine, snow, a contentious election, among many other 2020-ish happenings, I’m trying to focus on what I’m grateful for. Here’s my list: • The relative health and safety of my family, and the community I live in. • Friends who will make grocery store runs. • Orange-colored string lights. • Our neighbor’s projected house witch. • Conscientious and helpful school teachers. • Television shows like the Office, Seinfeld, The Good Place. • Dogs. Aren’t pets amazing? They have no clue that the world is chaotic; th...

  • We the People: Originalism and Judge Amy Coney Barrett

    David Adler|Oct 26, 2020

Judge Amy Coney Barrett, destined to be the next member of the U.S. Supreme Court, has characterized her approach to constitutional interpretation as a mixture of “originalism” and “textualism.” She has said that the Constitution should be interpreted as it was understood when it was ratified. She shares this approach with her mentor, the late Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative icon. The two doctrinal methods are frequently in conflict. That leaves Judge Barrett in a position to choose which method she would employ, in which cases, for var...

  • Archival Anecdotes: When the snows fly

    Rachel Brazil|Oct 26, 2020

Hunting is a big deal around these parts, and it seems to have been that way for a long time. When it comes to related artifacts found in the museum, the sport of bird hunting dominates. There are many more photos like the one above dating around 1910. It was a time when there were few rules and regulations regarding wildlife. The sky really was the limit! Upon close inspection of the above photo, it is clear these gentlemen harvested a variety of birds ranging from Canada geese, several...
