Boil order issued for New Rockford, then later lifted

Sample results received on Thursday, Oct. 15 indicated that Fecal coliform (E.coli) bacteria were found in one of two wells that supply the City of New Rockford’s water. Therefore, on Friday, Oct. 16, the Department of Environmental Quality asked that the city implement a boil order.

Fecal coliform bacteria can make people sick, and are a particular concern for individuals with weakened immune systems. Samples taken within the distribution system were not positive for Fecal coliform, but indicated that total coliform bacteria was present. Fecal coliforms and E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes, therefore additional precautions were taken and the boil order implemented. Upon receipt of the sample results, public works staff began using the city’s second well as the water source.

Residents were instructed not to drink the water without boiling it first. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be in the water. Boiled water, bottled water or water from another approved source were to be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.

Samples were taken from five residences Saturday, and two of the five tested positive for total coliforms. Those same residences were sampled Monday, and all five were negative for coliform bacteria, so the boil order was lifted as of 4 p.m. Tuesday and the water supply was deemed safe to consume.
