"I needed something that I could do when they are out and about doing their things," she said, adding that she doesn't necessarily share her husband's love for hunting. So, she went on the...

  • Looney Times

    Tom Purcell|Mar 15, 2021

Is the world finally coming to grips with the wrongs I endured as a child growing up in the 1970s? I came of age before 24-hour cable news channels sensationalized childhood abductions and made every parent in America terrified that their kid was likely to become the next victim. We '70s kids were in constant physical danger– real danger. We built wood ramps that we jumped our Spyder bikes off of– without any thought of a helmet or elbow pads. We roamed freely anywhere we wanted all day lon...

  • Dr. Seuss monetizes the culture wars

    Thomas Knapp|Mar 15, 2021

On March 2 -- the late Theodor Seuss Geisel's 117th birthday -- Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that, some time last year, it ceased publishing/licensing six of the popular author's children's books which "portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong." Cue woke approval, deplorable outrage, investor interest, and low-information reader fear, all of which are good for business. As I write this on March 9, Dr. Seuss titles constitute ten of Amazon's top 25 "Best Sellers in Children's Books." On eBay, sellers have copies of And to Think I...

  • Sermonette: An Honest Chat

    Alicia Louters|Mar 15, 2021

The spiritual difficulties I’ve gone through have usually come in waves of struggle. Something like this: getting better—same struggle—getting better, etc. I usually don’t talk about it until I have it all sorted out, and feel like I understand exactly what is happening. I’m still learning my walk with God doesn’t have to look perfect. So today, I wanted to chat a little about struggle, failure, and accepting God’s grace. First, I think it’s important to note that no matter who you are, following Jesus comes with hardships. Yes, you have a...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Smiles all around

    Rachel Brazil|Mar 15, 2021

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the lack of smiles in photographs from the earliest parts of the 20th century. It turns out the smiles that we expect in photos didn't come into fashion until the late 1930s. While much of this had to do with changing cultural norms and improved dentistry, there is one theory about photogenic smiles that makes perfect sense.   People could buy a box camera from the drugstore for a dollar. Soon everyday folks were taking snapshots of the people in their lives, ef...

    David Adler|Mar 15, 2021

The question of governmental authority to punish speech in the name of national security came before the Supreme Court for the first time in 1919 in Schenck v. United States, resulting in the court’s first major ruling on the scope of freedom of speech. Schenck involved criticism of America’s entry into the First World War and confronted Americans with a dilemma: Does the Free Speech Clause protect the right to criticize the government in its conduct of war? Schenck was a Russian émigré who supported the Russian Revolution that overthrew the C...
