  • ONLINE ONLY: Drunk driving checkpoints test personal liberties

    Diane Newberry, Newspaper Association|Feb 18, 2019

North Dakota is known for many things, but two of its defining characteristics might be its long, open highways and its citizens’ purported propensity for drinking. With this in mind, the Legislature is once again re-evaluating how it contends with drunk driving. HB 1442 would stop law enforcement officers from conducting scheduled DUI checkpoints in which all drivers on the road are stopped for questioning. The bill’s primary sponsor, Rep. Rick Becker, R-Bismarck, said checkpoints are ineffective and “outdated.” By relying on them, “We’re...

The 66th Legislative Session has moved into the stage where we are spending longer periods of time on the floor, as we complete our work by crossover. All bills that have a hearing in a committee must be voted on by the full House during a floor session. The Appropriations Committee will continue to meet for extended hours as...

  • N.D. Senate Update for Feb. 18, 2019

    Senator Joan Heckaman, District 23|Feb 18, 2019

This week I completed the testimony in the Senate on the last few bills I sponsored. I introduced SB 2266 which would provide that K-12 schools have a policy on the seclusion and restraint of students. This bill is similar to one from last session. Families came from across the state to provide testimony in favor of this bill. Schools not only need a policy, they need funds to train teachers and staff in techniques in deescalating students, planning positive interventions and notifying parents. The bill is still in committee. SB 2228 would...

  • If you plan to run for President….

    LLoyd Omdahl|Feb 18, 2019

“This is the year!” Herb exclaimed to his longtime buddy Gordon on the assembly line over in the plastics factory. “So for what reason is this the year?” Gordon asked. “We’ve both passed at least 50 but without showing any favoritism to other years.” “This is the year I’m running for president,” Herb declared. “President? Of the United States? You will be just one more stranger in the crowd,” Gordon warned. “You need name ID – your dog doesn’t even know you. What makes you think you can run for...

  • A preference for peace

    Thomas Knapp|Feb 18, 2019

I'm not ashamed to admit it: I'm a peacenik. I think war is a bad thing. I've seen it up close and personal as an infantryman, and I'd like to see less of it, preferably none at all, either up close or from a distance. In part, this desire also makes me a "non-interventionist." That is, in a world with 195 "sovereign nations," it makes sense that the political officials in each one should mind his or her own state's business and not try to decide who gets to run the other 194, or how they should do so. And this, in turn, leads to scolding...

  • Amy for America

    Peter Funt|Feb 18, 2019

There are many metrics for what makes a good president, but being able to deliver a speech in falling snow and mid-teen temperatures without hat or gloves for nearly a half hour isn't one of them. Fortunately for Americans, there's more to Amy Klobuchar's candidacy than Sunday's wintry scene on the shore of the Mississippi River. The Minnesota Democrat is the real deal. Entering a crowded field of presidential aspirants, Sen. Klobuchar is not yet a front-runner. Much will transpire over the...

  • Dakota Datebook: Roy P. Johnson

    Merrill Piepkorn|Feb 18, 2019

Feb. 20, 2019 — The professional historians at our colleges and universities and of course the State Historical Society do a great job of unearthing and preserving our state’s history, and passing it along to the rest of us… in the classroom, at the State Heritage Center, at one of our historical sights or in several other ways. But there have been many North Dakotans who, although they are not directly employed in the history business, do a great job in preserving and telling our story. One of those people is Roy P. Johnson, who was born on Ma...
