  • Public input sought on County-Township Snow Removal Policy

    Rachel Brazil|Jan 13, 2020

Current policies state that the county will only clear township roads when a township supervisor has called in a request. Most often though, Weber said he receives calls from residents before he hears from the township officials. That gets tricky, because even if he sees the need to clear that road, he must first get township approval. Weber adds that it is the residents who know those roads best,...

  • Liberal NY Jew does well in North Dakota

    Jan 13, 2020

When former State Representative Eliot Glassheim came to North Dakota in the early 1970s to teach literature at the University of North Dakota, he had three strikes against him: He was from New York. He was liberal. He was Jewish. Any of these could make him a target of conservative anti-Semitists. But the parade of speakers at his memorial used every positive adjective in Webster’s Dictionary to praise him. As his friend, I had written a list of virtues in the event I was asked to make a few remarks. This was a habit from the days of being l...

  • The onion calendar

    Tony Bender|Jan 13, 2020

I'd just pulled up to the post office to mail a couple of packages when Delbert Eszlinger called to wish me a Happy New Year from his ranch seven miles northeast of Ashley. After we bragged about the size of our snowdrifts for a while, I asked him about the famous onion calendar he and Donna do every New Year's Eve, which predicts moisture for the coming year. The way it works is you slice an onion in half vertically to create 12 “cups” representing the months of the year. Then you add a teaspoon of salt to draw out the moisture from the oni...

And yet, some women found fault with the fact that not enough men were flocking to see it. (“Ahem…unless that plan involves something foolhardy like cutting back on a newspaper that costs four dollars an issue. Just wing it. Alas, half the people who made such res...

  • Living on Purpose:Our Spiritual Evolution

    Dr. Billy Holland|Jan 13, 2020

People believe many different things about God and spirituality. Some are convinced that it is arrogant to assume that we can know God’s will or walk with the Lord personally, however, what most people never stop to consider is how could the creator ask his creation to accomplish something without knowing who he is or what he expects from them? The divine reality of absolute truth includes the concept that God sincerely desires to share his mysteries and to work alongside his children to help t...

This is from the devotional, “God is in the Manger” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor who was imprisoned and executed for participating in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ Or ‘What will we drink?’ Or Whatever will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your Heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all the...
