  • Our Outdoors: Spring bearings

    Nick Simonson|Apr 17, 2023

A full 30 inches of snow drift lined the banks of the small creek just down the road from the cabin in drifts that clung to and overhung its edges. Under the heating sun of mid-morning, however, they had already begun to add to it from the white extensions dripping meltwater, making perfect circles on the creek’s flowing surface with each droplet. Hoping to grab a photo of the half dozen just-returned mallard ducks that had been milling about in its waters the day before, or the two swans t...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Spring Snow Goose spotted nearby

    Doug Leier|Mar 27, 2023

I saw my first Canada goose of the year on a sunny Tuesday afternoon on February 7 about 4:30 p.m. Yes, I know the exact date and time as I texted a friend who spends more time outdoors than I do talking and writing about it. He confirmed that he spotted a few earlier in the day. While we understood we had more cold and snow to get through before spring arrived, we also knew the spring conservation season for light geese (no Canada geese are allowed) official opening day was near. Before the...

7-24 licenses needed April 1 North Dakota anglers, trappers and hunters are reminded that new licenses are required beginning April 1. Licenses can be purchased online by visiting the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website, gf.nd.gov. Once the license is processed, hunters and anglers will have the option to print a hard copy and/or download the license to a smart phone or mobile device, which is helpful when asked to show proof while hunting or fishing in rural areas that lack cellular service. Licenses can also be purchased at more...

  • Our Outdoors: Spring simplicity

    Nick Simonson|Mar 27, 2023

A twisting garden worm on a gold Aberdeen hook under a split shot just a couple feet below a red-and-white bobber; that’s how most of us start fishing and certainly how it began for me. The setup – and it feels like that term makes it seem all too complex, as if it were somehow part of an intricate angling method – caught perch and bluegills from the dock, swarms of bullheads from the grassy banks of the river and the occasional largemouth bass from the old farm pond throughout my child...

  • Eddy County 4-H winter skills experience

    Neecie Swart|Mar 13, 2023

A couple of weekends ago, several families from the Eddy County 4-H Shooting Sports and Outdoor Skills Club met near Lake Metigoshe to learn and practice some outdoor winter skills. Most of us arrived on February 17. Leader Mike Brazil worked hard to plan affordable things for our member families to learn and do. We stayed in little wooden cabins that were nice and cozy. They were even more cozy and nice than I had pictured in my head. They had kitchens, bathrooms, couches and bunk beds. We brou...

Participation needed in hunter harvest surveys While North Dakota’s 2022 hunting seasons have come and gone, hunter success, or lack thereof, still matters to wildlife managers. The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has conducted hunter harvest surveys for more than a half-century, using the findings to help manage the state’s wildlife populations. Thousands of surveys are sent annually, and participation is strongly urged because hunter harvest plays a noted role, for example, in setting hunting license numbers for the upcoming sea...

  • North Dakota Outdoors: The reality of winter and wildlife

    Doug Leier|Jan 9, 2023

When the phone rings or the inbox pings, it's reminiscent of unwrapping a Christmas present. I literally have no idea what's behind the rings and pings. It's one part of my job that truly keeps me on my toes and I enjoy it. Questions about regulations, to the hottest fishing bite, or simply a random wildlife observation, I just never know what's coming. As the saying goes, I truly believe there's no such thing as a silly question. There isn't. The phone conversations allow for a more natural...

  • Our Outdoors: A year of lessons

    Nick Simonson|Jan 2, 2023

The lessons learned coming out of the drought in 2022, where a wet spring spurred regrowth of upland grasses and the thickening of the cattail sloughs which remained on the landscape, are many. Foremost among them came with the pleasant surprise of many upland hunters who found higher numbers of pheasants in their favorite stomping areas where good cover and loafing grasses reestablished over the summer months following the vernal soaking. While in the moment, the teachings of nature may be...
