  • Collegiate Congratulations: Call for submissions

    Amy Wobbema|Jan 9, 2023

We’re in the last week of holiday break for my college-aged daughter, and I’m wondering how it went so quickly. We’ve gone over her grades from her first semester as a full-time college student, and she’s looking ahead to her spring semester schedule. Over the past three weeks, she’s visited friends and family, helped me with a couple of projects at work, and done a fair amount of cooking and cleaning at home. Man, I’m going to miss that as soon as she’s gone again! By the time many of you read...

  • How Barbara Walters crafter her incomparable career

    Peter Funt|Jan 9, 2023

Barbara Walters might never have become a powerful force in broadcast journalism had she lacked the chutzpah to extract a promise from her bosses at NBC News in 1973. As she explained it to me, she had already worked at the "Today" show for a dozen years, serving first as a writer and then as the "Today girl" on set - a bubbly balance to the program's male host, the journalist Frank McGee. If McGee were ever to leave, NBC pledged, she would be named co-host, an unprecedented role for a woman....

  • At year's end: A duty to protect our constitutional democracy

    David Adler|Jan 9, 2023

In this season of peace, remembrance and celebration, we are beckoned by the ghosts of 1776 and 1787 to recall the historic work of this nation’s founders in establishing a republic grounded in the aspirational principles of liberty, equality and self-governance, and our duty as citizens to defend to defend it. The serious challenges to American Democracy, at home and abroad, have generated searching concerns amidst exposure of its deep-seated vulnerabilities and led some to wonder if our nation is facing a “Machiavellian Moment,” the point whe...

  • Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

    Pamela O'Connor Harrison|Jan 9, 2023

Late in December 2021 when I read my copy of the Transcript, a couple of things caught my eye. First, there was a great picture of my mom, Kathy O’Connor, and second, a listing of all the unmarked graves in Eddy County. In the list, the family name O’Keefe stood out to me. I knew that my second great-grandmother was an O’Keefe, so these people were family. Armed with an Ancestry account and a lot of free time (it was during the semester break from my college teaching job), I dove into researching the O’Keefe in the unmarked grave list. The O’Ke...

    Rev. Amy Kippen|Jan 9, 2023

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Fat...

  • Tree Talk: Winter is here

    Gerri Makay|Jan 9, 2023

WINTER. If this season is defined by cold, snowy weather – then it arrived nearly two months ago, long before the astronomical calendar-date of winter's start on December 21. Local weather reports warn us to protect our bodily extremities (our head, hands and feet) from exposure, to reduce the risk of frostbite. When it's bad enough outside, many of us can make the choice to hunker down inside. With the wind and harsh temperatures, how are trees on the Northern Plains able to survive? For s...
