Coincidences. Do they occur more frequently in small communities? You know what I am referring to. You talk about someone to your spouse and then run into that person in the grocery store on the very same day, or you cross paths in the fitness center with someone you haven't seen for a while and exclaim, "I was just wondering last night about how you were doing!" Two New Rockford High School graduates share several coincidences. Both Kyle Seibold, Class of 1996, and Matthew Lommen, Class of...

Principal Natalie Becker began by making a recommendation...

  • Volunteers are the heart of hospice

    Apr 16, 2018

Most of us remember a person who seemed to go out of their way to help us during a difficult time in our life. April 15 – 21 is National Volunteer Week, a time to honor and celebrate those caring individuals that do so much for so many – particularly those hospice volunteers that accompany people during life’s final journey. Nowhere will you f...

  • Sermonette - April 16, 2018

    Rev. Randy Hahne|Apr 16, 2018

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). A couple of weeks ago I was putting together a puzzle with one of my daughters. When we were finished, we noticed something— there was a piece missing. At our home this is a regular occurrence and very rarely to do we put together a puzzle that has all of the pieces. I am sure random puzzle pieces can be found in the toy box, or perhaps inside the vacuum. Regardless of where the piece is, something was missing and the puzzle will never...

  • Raise your $80,000 for the national debt

    LLoyd Omdahl|Apr 16, 2018

Dear U.S. Government: (Please pass this message to the person in charge today. If no one is in charge, send it to Mexico. They can deduct it from the cost of the wall.) The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) did more harm to cardiac patients than a personal letter from the IRS. The CBO has been doing some figuring and discovered that the government debt would increase for each person to $82,000 in the next decade. With Republicans running Washington, I assumed that they would be cutting the...

  • Roseanne is raising the Barr

    Blair Bess|Apr 16, 2018

Roseanne Barr has risen from the dead. After a lengthy absence from television, Roseanne and the rest of her fictional Conner family are once again gracing our living rooms. And now, as then, she’s not limiting herself to once-weekly sitcom appearances to make her presence known. Her recent use of Twitter assures us of that. Roseanne was - and remains - a brilliant media strategist. In addition to the role she played on her show, she fostered a public persona that sometimes, quite deliberately, left her looking as though she were the sole s...

  • To opioid hell and back

    Michael Reagan|Apr 16, 2018

I’m feeling human again, thanks. After three weeks of living in opioid hell - of constantly being sick to my stomach, of throwing up, of having the shakes and feeling depressed and crying - my body and brain are back to normal. I’m no longer high and messed up on pain killers. I’m no longer trying to withdraw from them. And I have a new, up-close-and-personal understanding of the country’s opioid epidemic and how easy it is for a 70-something guy like me to become addicted to potent pain pi...

    Brian Kroshus|Apr 16, 2018

With excavation season almost here, it’s important to know what’s below. April is “National Safe Digging Month,” however, every month is equally important when it comes to digging safely. In the U.S., there are more than 20 million miles of underground utilities. Whether you’re a contractor, landscaper or “do-it-yourselfer,” calling 811 get lines marked before you dig can mean the difference between safely completing a...

    Apr 16, 2018

Beginning with WWII, just like M&Ms, Tootsie Rolls were added to field rations because the candy could hold up in a variety of weather conditions.
