O'Connor scores 33 in victory over Warwick

The New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team held their final home game for the season as they hosted the District 4 Warwick Lady Warriors on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

The Rockets ended their last game in the NR-S gymnasium with a bang.

In the first quarter alone, the Rockets scored 30 points to the Lady Warriors six. Fourteen of those came from NR-S junior Kaiya O'Connor, with the rest coming from the combination of Kelsie Belquist and Ava Peterson.

This, however, was just the beginning for O'Connor.

The Rockets out-scored the Lady Warriors in the second quarter 24-9 with key 3-pointers coming from Belquist and Trysta Thumb.

Warwick senior Madison Cavanaugh scored four of the nine points for the Lady Warriors in quarter two.

At the half, the Rockets held a healthy 54-15 lead.

Quarter three brought points galore once again for the Rockets. Specifically from O'Connor.

Out of the 23 points scored by the Rockets, 15 came from O'Connor.

Head coach Elliott Belquist decided to bench his starters in quarter four to allow some court time to the non-starters.

Those adding points to the stats were NR-S junior Bailey Jacobson and NR-S sophomore Emmie Belquist.

Overall, the Rockets defeated the Lady Warriors 83-33.

Top scorers for the Rockets were O'Connor with 33, K. Belquist with 21 and Peterson with 10.

Cavanaugh led the Lady Warriors with 20 points.

The Rockets competed in Northwood on Friday, Feb. 2 in their final District 4 game before the District tournament set to take place in New Rockford on February 9, 10 and 12.

On Monday, Feb. 5, the Rockets are set to compete against the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder (A,B) in Medina starting at 6 p.m.

Both of these games will be covered in the February 12 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
