Rockets 4th at Carrington Kiwanis/Lions meet

For the first time in a three-year span, Carrington High School played host to a track meet, welcoming 10 teams to the slightly breezy Kiwanis/Lions Meet Saturday, May 4, under cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 50's.

The long layoff between events at the Stadium '76 complex was due to construction of the new elementary school in Carrington, which started classes this past fall just a few hundred meters north of the track.

Because of the project, the traditional throwing event staging areas had to be relocated, and finishing work completed once the ground settled.

NR-S was one of the schools taking to the oval, jumping pits and rings, and finished fourth place overall in both the boys' and girls' standings. The Rocket men tallied 84 points, while the women had 47.

The host Cardinals and Class A school Jamestown flip-flopped on the top of both team races, with the Blue Jay boys and Carrington girls coming out on top at the end of the afternoon.

Junior Bo Belquist captured four event titles at the Kiwanis/Lions, sweeping the three sprints (100, 200 and 400-meter dashes) and winning the triple jump. In the two shorter races, Parker Granger (third, second) and Billy Fleming (fifth, sixth), all earned placement, and Kaden Jensen took seventh in the 200.

Jensen was the other winner for the Rockets, winning the long jump and finishing as runner-up to Belquist in the triple jump.

NR-S had one more placer on the boys' side, that being Hunter Johnson bringing home sixth in the discus.

Seventh-grade phenom Kelsie Belquist was the champion of both the 400-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles, and took third in the triple jump.

Also in the hurdle races, Hannah Haley took third in the 300 and fourth in the 100. Brianna Price came in third place in the 400, and, in the 200, added a fifth place run.

Kayahna Hopfauf finished seventh in the long jump to conclude the Rockets' scorers in Carrington.
