29 Rocket archers earn trip to NASP Western Nationals

The Rocket archery team was 72 strong at the North Dakota State NASP Tournament on March 15 and 16.

Competing in both bullseye and 3D, the locals represented New Rockford-Sheyenne well.

The 26-member elementary team had a banner day, with several archers shooting their personal best scores in bullseye. The team was rewarded for their efforts with the state championship in bullseye.

In the team competition, the top 12 scores are accumulated (including at least four girls and four boys) to come up with the team score. The Rockets scored 2,815 points, which was 116 points more than the second place team, Wilton Public School.

The Rocket elementary archers were led in the bullseye tournament by fourth grader Averie Alfstad, who scored a 266. She improved her personal best score by more than 40 points that day and finished fourth place overall among elementary girls.

Meanwhile, freshman archer Layton Jacobson took home his third consecutive state championship. He topped the leaderboard in the middle school boys' 3D division for the past two years, and this year he finished at the top of the high school boys' division in bullseye.

Jacobson shot a 290 in the bullseye tournament, one better than the runner-up, senior Connor Cose of Rolla. In the 3D tournament, the two traded places and Cose ended up at the top of the leaderboard. Jacobson came away with the overall male archer award in bullseye, and Cose received the same in 3D.

Four more Rocket archers finished in the top 10 of their respective divisions and earned a trip to the NASP Western Nationals.

Koy Zieman earned a spot in both bullseye and 3D. He placed eighth among middle school boys in the bullseye tournament and fifth in 3D. He scored a 276 in bullseye and 282 in 3D.

Braylon Alfstad shot a 277 in 3D and finished in eighth place among middle school boys.

Cordell Myhre hit 260 in the 3D tournament and finished in sixth place among elementary boys. Maddie Schaefer finished in 10th place among elementary girls in the 3D tournament with a score of 236.

The elementary team ended the day in third place overall in the 3D tournament, and the middle school team also finished third overall in bullseye.

A total of 887 archers from 39 schools competed in the North Dakota State NASP Tournament in bullseye. In the 3D tournament, there were 736 archers competing from 36 schools.

Four make All State

Six archers had the opportunity to shoot for their place on the All State Team, and four ultimately made the team.

To qualify in the high school division, an archer must score at least 280 in any tournament during the season. Bradyn Collier and Layton Jacobson both made the cut.

Four middle school archers also qualified by scoring at least 275 during the season: Braylon Alfstad, Sawyer Huso, Gabe Smith and Koy Zieman.

In the shoot off, each archer shoots a round of five arrows, and the top 12 scorers are named to the All-State Team. Layton Jacobson scored the highest amongst the high schoolers and was the first place team member. Bradyn Collier also earned a spot on the All State Team.

Braylon Alfstad shot a perfect 50 in the shoot off and was the first place middle school All State Team member. Sawyer Huso also earned a spot on the middle school team.

As one of the top five overall shooters in the 3D tournament, Layton Jacobson also had a chance at a fully-guided antelope hunt and other prizes in the 3D shoot off. Each had one shot at a 3D antelope target, and the archer closest to the bullseye mark was declared the winner. Jetta Coombs, a freshman from Griggs County Central, was declared the winner.

As the state champion in the high school bullseye tournament, Jacobson won a $4,000 scholarship, a Genesis bow and other prizes.

Jacobson currently sits in 25th place overall in the national rankings for bullseye, tied with 24 other archers who have a personal best score of 295 this season.

"The '24 archery season has been fantastic. It's so much fun to watch the young kids improve so quickly, said NR-S archery head coach Mike Schaefer. "I also enjoy watching how the older kids work just as hard to better themselves. The kids have done well all season, and the state tournament was great. I look forward to nationals and to next year." The 29 Rocket archers who qualified for the NASP Western National Tournament have the opportunity to compete in Sandy, Utah on April 25-26. More details about their trip, and any fundraising efforts, will be reported in future editions of the Transcript.
