Rocket boys rout St. John; take care of H-N Thunder

The New Rockford-Sheyenne boys’ basketball team’s winning streak reached seven games, and the Rockets have won 10 of their last 11 with their most two recent victories over St. John and Hatton-Northwood.

NR-S scored an 81-35 triumph on Feb. 2 over the Woodchucks, and followed that up three calendar days later with a 78-69 win against the Thunder. Both games were played in the NR-S Gym.

At this time last season, the Woodchucks were hitting fifth gear, and their uptempo brand of basketball, helmed by All-Stater Kyler McGillis, would end up taking the school near the border to their first state tournament since 1949.

Graduation proceeded to take a big toll on this year’s edition of the forest green and black, but the ‘Chucks have still soldiered forward to a respectable 8-6 record entering their Saturday meeting with NR-S.

The Rockets, who defeated St. John earlier this season in the CNDC Tournament by a count of 71-56, delivered an even more emphatic statement this time around.

Four players hit for at least 10 points on NR-S’ side. Junior forward Hunter Thompson led the Rockets with 17 points, with 13 of those scored in the first half of play, and Teddy Allmaras’ 16-point effort featured four three-point shots.

Bo Belquist and Parker Granger each scored 15 points, and Granger’s stat line included 13 tallies in just the second quarter alone.

The Woodchucks’ Mich-ael Dunn was the team’s top scorer with 11 points.

In makeup action this past Tuesday, the Rockets took a nine-point victory over the Hatton-Northwood Thunder, a game which replaced the cancelled Hillsboro Holiday Hoops meeting with May-Port-CG originally planned for Dec. 27.

Anticipated to be a hard-fought game coming into play, the Thunder took the Rockets’ best shot early, but kept themselves in the game with efficient shooting of their own.

The major share of that was provided by junior forward Alex Wolfe. After scoring just two points in the opening quarter, Wolfe heated up in the middle of the contest with 13 second quarter points, and finished with 10 more in the third, ending his night with 29 points.

Allmaras had a big night for NR-S, hitting a pair of threes in both the second and third quarters and helping to carry the Rocket offense. NR-S’ precision passing led to many easy looks for Thompson inside, and he responded with a 17-point outing.

Belquist and Longnecker had 12 points for NR-S, and the Thunder (11-5) received 13 points from Brett Foss and 10 more by Avery Thorsgard.

The Rockets now sit at 13-2 overall pending a makeup game on Feb. 9 against the Benson County Wildcats, which will be the final District 7 game for NR-S prior to the tournament in Devils Lake at the DLHS’ Sports Center on February 22, 23 and 25.

Upcoming action will be the final two games of the regular campaign for NR-S, as they host Griggs County Central on Tuesday for Parents’ Night, and face the Midkota Mustangs in Glenfield on Thursday.

Each set of games will be A-B-junior high slates beginning at 4:30 p.m.
