Tough stretch for NR-S girls results in district defeats

The ball didn’t quite bounce in the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls’ favor during this past week’s worth of basketball action in the District 7 slate.

First, the Rockets let a potential victory against the Benson County Wildcats slip away when they were outscored 27-16 in the second half and the visitors stole a 43-39 win on Jan. 18.

It didn’t get any easier for NR-S when the district frontrunners, the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians, brought their brand of roundball wizardry to the Rockets’ floor. The Indians, gaining votes in the latest Class B coaches’ poll, pulled away in the second and third quarters for a 65-34 victory this past Monday.

The two defeats pushed NR-S back to 7-7 for the winter slate, but more importantly, dropped them into a fourth place tie in the District 7 standings at 2-3 with Dakota Prairie. The Rockets currently own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Knights.

Benson County’s five-foot-six freshman phenom guard, Quinn Neppl, proved to be near impossible to stop in the second half, scoring 19 of her game-best 26 points to give the Wildcats (6-8, 3-2 District 7) their needed boost. Katelyn Bingham added eight points, and the two were the only BC players to score more than two points.

Youthful talent also served the Rockets’ following opponent, the Lady Indians, very well. In this instance, a pair of freshmen, Myona Dauphinais and Ezura Rainbow, were the catalysts of the FW-M offense with 17 and 14 points.

Additional double-figure scorers for FW-M (12-2, 5-0 District 7), each finishing with 11 points, were Latasha Bellile and Jasmine Lohnes. All of Lohnes’ points came at the free-throw line (11-for-12), highlighting an almost-flawless 19-for-20 team effort.

In both games for NR-S, Hannah Haley was the top team scorer, as she tallied 16 points in the loss to Benson.

County and 14 against FW-M. Dani Bjerke also added 12 points from the opening game.

The Rockets had their district finale this past Thursday night in Warwick, and hope to maintain positioning in their seeding going into the District 7 Tournament, to be held February 8-9 and 11 at Four Winds High School in Fort Totten.

Today (January 28), NR-S hits the final part of their regular season with a nondistrict game against Midkota at home, starting at 5:30 p.m. with the junior high game and followed by varsity.

On Thursday, the team hosts Parents’ Night by entertaining the Barnes County North Lady Bison for an A-B-junior high slate beginning at 4:30 p.m.
