Carrington gets the best of Post 30 in doubleheader

New Rockford American Legion Post 30 played host to Carrington’s Post 25 in baseball action on Wednesday, July 18.

Game One

In game one, both Carrington and Post 30 scored two runs in the first. Tyrus Smith reached second base with one out on an error. Teddy Allmaras also reached second base on an error, scoring Smith. Seth Soderholm knocked in Allmaras on a single to right. The locals added one more in the second. Hunter Thompson drew a one out walk and scored on a double to left by Luke Ystaas.

Carrington added three runs in the fifth, while New Rockford came up with two. Bo Belquist singled to left with one out. Smith also singled to left. Both runners scored on a double to left by Soderholm.

Carrington had a big sixth inning. They scored five runs and sent nine batters to the plate.

Post #30 mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. Smith drew a lead-off walk. Allmaras singled to left. Soderholm knocked in one run on a single. Allmaras scored on a passed ball. Tucker Longnecker knocked in Soderholm on an infield out, but three runs wouldn’t be enough for the win. Carrington defeated the locals 10-8. Cole Myhre and Kyle Leapaldt pitched well overall for their respective teams.

Carrington: Leapaldt, Jayden Shipman 7 and Lucas Geiszler.

New Rockford: Myhre, Allmaras 6 and Soderholm.

Carrington: Payton Smith 2 for 3, Trey Rosenau 2 for 3, double, triple.

New Rockford: Soderholm 3 for 4, double. Ystaas 2 for 4, double. Belquist, Smith, Allmaras and Thompson each had one hit.

Game Two

Carrington had a big first inning, scoring seven runs. Post 30 came up with one run in the third. Belquist led off with a single. He stole second and scored on a single by Soderholm. Carrington scored three runs in the fourth. New Rockford plated five runs in the fourth. Smith knocked in two runs on a single. Soderholm knocked in one run on a single. The other two runs scored on passed balls. Carrington added three more runs in the fifth and they also went on to win game two by a final of 13-6.

Colter Soderholm pitched a decent overall game, but like the first game, the locals did not play well defensively. Both teams hit the ball quite well in both games.

New Rockford closed the regular season at 9-5 in sectional play and 13-9 overall.

Post #30 entered post-season play on Tuesday, July 24 at the Central Regional Tournament in Rugby. If Post #30 advances on to the State Class B Baseball Tournament, it will be at Langdon on August 1-5. We’ll have full coverage of the regional tournament in next week’s issue.
