Rocket archery: Rockets aim high

The Rocket Archery Team currently has 52 members, and an average of 45 attend each tournament. The season, which runs January thru March, ends this weekend with the North Dakota National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament in Minot on March 23-24.

This year the program used grant funds to double the number of targets for students to use for practice, so now 20 kids can shoot at a time. A set of 3D targets were also purchased, and students started practicing with them last week.

Coach Jamie Risovi said that the archers "have improved by leaps and bounds every single week." He added that the local team is catching up to other schools really fast, some who have had the program 13 years or more. He said that one of the things he really appreciates about the archery program is that all students are on a level playing field, each getting the same opportunities to practice and compete. Risovi said his goal for the students is that they "shoot" to improve their personal best scores each time, and 75 percent of the kids achieved a new personal best at the last tournament in Rolla!

The NASP Academic Archer award was given to 42 students this year.
