  • History of New Rockford: Sept. 30, 2019

    K. C. Gardner Jr.|Sep 30, 2019

On Sept. 13, 1902, Mrs. Florence Miller’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James McGwine, arrived by train to visit; they had been on the Pacific Coast for two months. William Milne, Sr., was in town with some large crab apples grown on his farm in the Sheyenne Valley. J.R. Craig was in on business. Frank Graham came in from Tiffany. Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Keyton were in town. Mr. and Mrs. James Dafoe were down from the Sheyenne Valley to shop, as were Mr. and Mrs. Sylvanus Marriage from southeast of town. Eddie Monahan brought in a load of wheat that w...

  • Dakota Datebook "Angie Dickinson"

    Merry Helm|Sep 30, 2019

Sept. 30, 2019 — Today is the birthday of legendary actress Angie Dickinson. Her given name was Angeline Brown, but the name for which she is better known came from her first husband, semi-pro football player Gene Dickinson. Angie was born in Kulm, in southeast North Dakota, where her father ran the Kulm Messenger. The family also lived in nearby Edgeley. Once a week, their father ran movies, and Angie developed an early fascination with stardom. It was her father’s drinking problem that inadvertently led to her acting career when Ang...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Sept. 30, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Sep 30, 2019

The story on the news last night was one of those “feel-good” stories that I love so much. East Grand Forks Senior High School football players, according to the news report, chose not to work out in their fancy new fitness center on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Instead, they put their muscles to work carrying wet rugs out of the basements of East Grand Forks residents affected by flooding after the recent torrential rainfall. It is a project the team chose to tackle as a way to say “thank you” for the...

  • Rockets pour it on in waterlogged Homecoming

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2019

In football, the thought has traditionally been that in torrential downpour conditions, a team's passing game would suffer the most. But for New Rockford-Sheyenne, it was just a leisurely walk in the rain. Quarterback Johnny Grann threw for 260 yards, completing 11 of his 13 attempts, and Bo Belquist had two touchdowns through the air and one on special teams to help the Rockets triumph over the North Border Eagles in a waterlogged Homecoming game Friday night, Sept. 20, by the score of 48-6....

  • NR-S tops Drake-Anamoose

    Sep 30, 2019

New Rockford-Sheyenne grabbed some momentum two nights in advance of their first Super Region 4 match of the season with a non-conference sweep at home over the Lady Raiders of Drake-Anamoose, 25-20, 25-15 and 29-27, played Tuesday night, Sept. 24. Tied at 16-16 in set one, the Rockets came back with a passion to take nine of the next 13 points for the opening win. Set two was mostly dominated by NR-S, winning by a 10-point final margin Drake-Anamoose showed their heart in the third and final...

  • Cardinals trounce Rockets

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2019

The latest edition of the Carrington/NR-S volleyball rivalry has concluded, and the Rockets will go back to the drawing board to fix some of their deficiencies. Carrington, who came into the match at 4-0 having not dropped a set to that point, kept that unblemished distinction intact with a 3-0 (11-25, 14-25, 10-25) defeat of NR-S at the East Gym on the CHS campus Thursday night, Sept. 19. The Rockets couldn't penetrate the Cardinals' stout blocking game at the net, as the homestanding Cards...

  • Homecoming Parade

    Sep 30, 2019

Has the “tin man” made his last appearance in the Homecoming parade? He’s been with the senior class since seventh grade, and he’s shown at left all decked out in red, white and blue on their Independence Day themed float. The sophomores took top honors with their Labor Day themed float. Students also drove golf carts in the spirit of the holiday....

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 30, 2019

The NR-S gym played host to six area teams on Saturday, Sept. 21. The junior varsity volleyball tournament started bright and early that morning with pool play. Both the NR-S "B" team and NR-S "C" team played two of the other opponents - Harvey/Wells County, Midkota, Carrington and Four Winds/Minnewaukan. Each of the NR-S teams ended pool play as the second seed. The "B" team had opened the day with a 1-1 loss to Carrington (25-17, 14-25), then tied Midkota (26-24, 24-26). Carrington won two...
