NR-S tops Drake-Anamoose

New Rockford-Sheyenne grabbed some momentum two nights in advance of their first Super Region 4 match of the season with a non-conference sweep at home over the Lady Raiders of Drake-Anamoose, 25-20, 25-15 and 29-27, played Tuesday night, Sept. 24.

Tied at 16-16 in set one, the Rockets came back with a passion to take nine of the next 13 points for the opening win. Set two was mostly dominated by NR-S, winning by a 10-point final margin

Drake-Anamoose showed their heart in the third and final set after trailing 23-14, and rattled off a 9-0 run to knot that set at 23 all. That was just the start of a frenetic battle for survival for the Raiders, which lasted well into extra points until NR-S closed out the victory on their 29th point.

The Rockets improved to 5-4 with the match result, which was highlighted by Kayahna Hopfauf's solid play up front with 10 kills, along with four blocks by McKayla Waldo.

Cassie Longnecker, NR-S' libero, had 23 digs versus the Raiders, and Hannah Haley bolstered Longnecker's efforts with 11 of her own.

The top assist-getter in the three-set match was Dani Bjerke, who had a total of 32.

The Rockets began their regional obligations this past Thursday night in the NR-S gym by taking on the HWC Hornets. Two more Region 4 matches are upcoming this week, with NR-S going to Maddock on Tuesday to take on Benson County (A-B-C-JH, 4 p.m.), and a home match with St. John Thursday evening (A-B-C, 5 p.m.)
