  • Working hands and a giving heart

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 10, 2019

When John Scanson retired, he knew that he wouldn't enjoy sitting around "doing nothing." He knew he was going to have to keep busy just to keep those aches and pains away. Not to mention the fact that he prefers to stay busy. After serving as Midkota School's janitor for 14 years, he had developed a strong bond with the kids and the school where he worked. When Scanson combined his desire to keep busy with his natural affinity for kids and interest in woodworking, the result has been pick-up lo...

  • Rosefield Dam reversal

    Amy Wobbema|Jun 10, 2019

The dam dilemma that has plagued the Eddy County Water Resource District (ECWRD), landowner Monty Schaefer and neighbors Doug and Chris Skadberg reached a turning point on Tuesday, June 4 after a tense discussion among the parties. As a result, plans to remove the dam have stalled and the Rosefield Dam will remain part of the landscape until further notice. Schaefer secured a meeting with the Office of the State Engineer (OSE) this spring after he found additional evidence to support his claim...

  • Local library offers lunar experience

    Jun 10, 2019

More than 40 years ago, during the Apollo 15, 16 and 17 moon missions, astronauts collected samples of lunar rocks and dust. Some of those samples are now at a public library near you. Thanks to NASA and the North Dakota State Library, these lunar samples and additional meteorite samples will be on display at the Eddy-New Rockford Library. While the lunar and meteorite samples are small and encapsulated in a Lucite disk, each one includes six different types of astromaterials. The Meteorite Sample Disk contains six different meteorite samples...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- Begin a tradition of giving

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 10, 2019

This week I met a very nice man. I had heard about John Scanson several times as, one by one, parts of his story kept popping up on Facebook. As was mentioned in the front page article, the Transcript covered a story last year when he built 24 handmade birdhouses and gave them to the students in Mrs. Hager’s class at NR-S. Some time later, a friend posted a picture of her granddaughter’s smiling face, along with other Kensal elementary students who had just received handmade doll beds from him...

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 10, 2019

They gained most of their notoriety on the football field, and led the NR-S Rockets to a state basketball appearance this winter. This spring, Teddy Allmaras and Bo Belquist proved that their game-changing abilities extended to the baseball diamond as well. Allmaras, a senior for the SNR Black Sox, was named to the Class B First Team All-State squad, and Belquist, a junior, was honored with a Second Team award as part of statewide selections announced on June 2. In his previous athletic...

  • Correction issued on triple jump school record

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 10, 2019

As much as it’s tempting to drive the narrative that Bo Belquist would break his own uncle’s school record in the triple jump, it turns out that assertion was pure fantasy. In articles published in the “Transcript” over a period of several weeks, Alex Belquist’s 2004 mark of 43’7”, which has since been surpassed by his nephew during both the regular track season and on Bo’s state title-clinching 45’ 6 1/2” leap in late May, has now been revealed to be incorrectly reported as NR-S’ top historica...
