The Rockets girls' varsity and junior varsity teams had no luck against the Cardinals. LA/E/M defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne 63-29, taking their 11th win of the season. Nathan Price|Feb 7, 2022

On Saturday, Jan. 29, nearly 200 archers from 12 nearby school districts descended on the Carrington Public School to compete in the Carrington 3D and Bullseye Archery Tournaments. Sophomore Connor Cose from Mt. Pleasant High School seized top marks in the bullseye tournament, scoring 293 points with 24 bullseye's. Cose's 293 points placed him first in every boys and highschool ranking, and were the most scored by a single archer in either tournament. However, Cose was outdone in the 3D...

  • NR-S Rockets abort takeoff in Lakota

    Nathan Price|Feb 7, 2022

On Friday, Jan. 28, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets fell 38-59 to the Lakota Raiders in another District 7 showdown. A worrying trend for NR-S has emerged in recent weeks - the Rockets aren’t taking off very well. As they did versus Harvey a few days prior, the Rockets had a terrible first quarter in Lakota, scoring just six first-quarter points to the Raiders’ 18. The slow starts are burying NR-S in a hole they have yet to prove they can dig out of. Against Harvey, NR-S clawed themselves out...

    Erik Gjovik|Feb 7, 2022

Class A opponents Devils Lake and West Fargo brought their teams to the East Gym Thursday night, Jan. 27, for a triangular dual with Carrington. The Cards contested 12 matches to the Firebirds’ eight, and won a 60-12 victory. In the nightcap, CHS did well to stay with the Packers, but fell by three, 39-36. Double winners in the dual were Trace Hoggarth (113), Matthew Duchscherer (126 and 132), Brecken Lura (138, pin and forfeit), Michael Clifton (182, pin and forfeit), and Callen Garber (195, p...

  • Rockets land short of win over Cardinals

    Nathan Price|Feb 7, 2022

The Rockets fell short in yet another comeback attempt versus the Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich Cardinals on Saturday, Jan. 29, falling by a score of 51-55. Put simply, the Rockets aren't a first-quarter team. The Rockets didn't just struggle finding the net in the first quarter on Saturday, they couldn't do anything defensively either. While shot-after-shot from NR-S was missing its mark, the Cardinals were breezing past Rockets' defenders for routine layups, amassing 29 first-quarter points in...

  • Collegiate Congrats: Belquist soars for Hawks

    Nathan Price|Feb 7, 2022

Bo Belquist, one of New Rockford-Sheyenne's most successful athletes, is continuing to shine at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. Belquist began attracting college scouts early on during his career at NR-S. In his junior year, he caught 54 passes for 1,096 yards and 18 touchdowns - more than enough to garner the attention of football scouts. When those colleges came knocking, many thought he'd follow the lead of his father, who attended and still rooted for North Dakota State University....

  • Collegiate Congrats: Larson "escapes" N.D. to fulfill dreams

    Sandra Larson|Feb 7, 2022

I was just a freshman enjoying spring break when I read the cursed email from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities telling us not to come back to campus for an extra week. I wasn't upset at the time, because it appeared like a bonus vacation! Who could have imagined I would be an incoming junior before campus reopened? In the meantime, I took classes online from my bedroom in Sheyenne. As you can imagine, it's hard to feel connected to your alma mater when you're studying six and one-half...

  • Our Outdoors: Help From My Friends

    Nick Simonson|Feb 7, 2022

A heightened wind gust flapped at the canvas of my flipover shack as my youngest son, Jackson, sat next to me sounding out the longer words in his brother's book, which I had tucked into the pocket of my ice fishing jacket and provided to him, after our run of fishing had quieted down some and the in-between doldrums settled in. My older son, AJ, had found a spot between my brother and my buddy helping to reel in the last flurry of perch that had rolled through, as the northwest wind peaked in...

  • The Peluso Report: Muscling Through Midwinter

    Mike Peluso|Feb 7, 2022

In this week's Devils Lake report, I'll touch on what is taking place up here for us right now and also the next chapter of my fishing adventures, which is approaching extremely fast! What's going on right now on Devils Lake? Well, for me and most of our crew things are definitely in a funk. The dog days of winter have hit, and this has happened every year I have guided up here about this time. For some reason things get tough for a bit. Rest assured, the lake will snap out of it and the fishing...

  • The Little Things

    Hannah Hayes|Feb 7, 2022

It's the little things that draw me to the uplands. Fishing, hunting, and falconry are just a few of the many hobbies I enjoy. I love ice fishing and open water angling, upland hunting and duck hunting, and it doesn't get more exciting than catching rabbits with my red-tailed hawk. However, in all of those options, the uplands remain a special place for me. I think most outdoorspeople can agree that we all find a sort of solace when we are enjoying the outdoors. Maybe the only way to properly...
