Summer baseball underway

Post 30 falls in Cando, SNR Babe Ruth takes down Owls

Legion baseball is underway, and on Tuesday, June 6, the Post 30 Black Sox kicked off their summer season against Post 79 in Cando.

Post 79 would undoubtedly be a tough opponent. In the spring season, the North Star Bearcats qualified for the Class B State Tournament. After suffering a narrow loss in the quarterfinals by Central Cass, they took down their next two opponents in the losers' bracket and finished their season in 5th place.

Meanwhile, the SNR Black Sox had just gone through a tough spring, having only won a handful of games and getting knocked out of the region tournament early in the lower bracket.

That being said, the Black Sox had begun looking better towards the end of the spring season, and enjoyed some good games behind the starting pitching of Keaton Cudworth.

Cudworth, of course, would be given the honor of starting the first game for the Sox this season. But unfortunately for Post 30, Cando managed to score some runs in the first inning.

A leadoff double from Zachary Jorde and two subsequent walks issued by Cudworth loaded the bases with no outs. Cudworth then managed to strike out the next two batters, but that was followed by back-to-back singles, allowing two Post 79 players to cross home plate.

Cudworth steadied the ship afterwards, however, as only one more Cando player would score that evening.

But that would only matter if the Sox' offense got going. They didn't.

Post 30 scored just a single run all game long, which came in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Cudworth. Crossing home plate was Brody Weisenburger, who earlier in the inning had been hit square in the back by an errant breaking ball.

The Sox would threaten to score more runs on multiple other occasions, but could never quite get the big hit they needed.

In the end, Cando managed a 4-1 win over the Black Sox, who can at least say they played a fairly close game against one of the best Class B baseball teams in North Dakota.

Meanwhile, Babe Ruth baseball has also kicked off, and the Sox' Babe Ruth team fared much better in their first game of the season.

Going up against the Nelson County Owls, the Black Sox enjoyed an impressive start from Skye Kramlich, who pitched 5.0 innings and only allowed two hits and one unearned run. He also struck out eight Nelson County batters.

On offense, meanwhile, it was Thomas Allmaras who shined brightest, as he went 4-for-4 from the batter's box. Easton Simon was also impressive offensively, going 3-of-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

With their help, the Sox' Babe Ruth team took a 7-5 victory to start their summer season.

The Babe Ruth team's home opener was held on Friday, June 7 against Hatton/Northwood, and their next game will be against Hillsboro Central Valley on Wednesday, June 14 in New Rockford.

Post 30, meanwhile, once again had to play tough opponents, those being Carrington on June 8 and Jamestown on June 10.

Their next game will be against the South Border Mustangs on Wednesday, June 14 at Wishek.
