Betty D. Brekken, 90, resident of Pekin, N.D., died Thursday, December 22, 2022 at the NCHS Care Center in McVille, N.D.

Betty Darlene Larson was born March 19, 1932 the daughter of Clarence and Hazel (Koloen) Larson. She spent her childhood in rural Aneta, N.D., attending elementary school in Pilot Mound Township, and graduating from McVille High School. She then went to Minneapolis for training as a Laboratory Technician. Betty met Osborne "Obbie" Brekken at a dance in McVille. They were married October 7, 1951 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural Aneta. They made their home at rural Pekin where they raised their family; nephew, Carmen Ensrud, joined the family for several years. Betty was a homemaker, farmhand, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Pekin Homemakers, Nelson County Arts Council, Pekin Lutheran Church and Choir, and was a Nelson County Queen Pageant Advisor. She loved dogs and enjoyed the kennel at the farm, as well as her neighbors, hunting, attending any and all sporting events that she was able, snowmobiling, cooking, baking, sewing, and quilting; she had sewn thousands of quilts.

Betty will be greatly missed by her three children, Rodney (Jan) Brekken of Casselton, N.D.; Patti (Murph) Thompson of Drayton, N.D., and Janet (Curt) Herman of Tolna, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; Kris, Kari, Matt, JoAnna, Bethany, James, Paige, Jayme, Robyn, and Alex; 24 great grandchildren, Kendall, Sydney, Carter, Ethan, Colston, Elly, Will, Violet, Gabriel, Peter, Laura, Mason, Adlee, Axel, Lyla, Elin, William, Beau, Brekken, Berkley, Ashtyn, Tralyn, Wrigley, and Ada.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Osborne; and nephew, Carmen Ensrud.

We would like to thank the staff at the NCHS Care Center who lovingly cared for our mom. We truly can't thank you enough.

The Funeral Service for Betty will be held at American Lutheran Church of Tolna, N.D., on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Pekin Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
