Rockets win pool, take four at Carrington Tournament

On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Rockets traveled to Carrington to compete in the Carrington Varsity Tournament alongside 11 other teams.

Unlike the Des Lacs-Burlington Laker Invite, the Rockets took win-for-win.

The first round of pool play was against the Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier Rebels. With a slow start to the morning, the Rebels defeated the Rockets 25-19 in the first set, which was a wakeup call for the Rockets.

The Rockets came back in the second set to defeat the Rebels 25-14, taking the win by points.

Next up in pool play were the Bishop Ryan Lions. Unlike the recent matchup in Burlington, the Rockets defeated the Lions in both sets.

The third and final match of pool play was against the Strasburg/Zeeland Clippers. The Clippers had yet to lose a match in pool play. The Clippers took the first set 25-21, but the Rockets came out ahead in the second set, with a final score of 25-19.

With the point wins over E-K-M and Strasburg/Zeeland, the Rockets finished first in their pool, to become the third seed in the tournament.

The Rockets were set to play the Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawks. This game was a very close match. The Rockets defeated the Nighthawks 26-24 in the first set and 25-17 in the second set.

Next up was the Medina-Pingree/Buchanan Thunder. The Rockets pulled off a miraculous first set win of 26-24 against the Thunder, but it went downhill from there. The Thunder came back to defeat the Rockets 25-14 in the second set and 15-10 in the third set. With this loss, the Rockets would move on to play for third and fourth place against the Strasburg/Zeeland Clippers. M-P/B would move on to compete in the championship round against the Carrington Cardinals.

This second matchup between the Rockets and the Clippers was similar to the first, with the Clippers taking the first set 25-23, and the Rockets taking the second set 25-21. But the Clippers were determined to beat the Rockets and defeated them 15-13 in the third and final set.

The Rockets finished the tournament in fourth place, with the Clippers taking third place, the Thunder taking second place and the Cardinals in first.

During the championship matchup between the Cardinals and the Thunder, Carrington libero Mya Schroeder, hit her 1,000th dig. Congratulations Mya!
