New Rockford to host first day of Babe Ruth district tournament on July 13
The New Rockford Black Sox Babe Ruth team just keeps winning.
After walking away victorious from two more games on June 29 and July 5, the New Rockford Black Sox boasted a 8-2 overall record, enough to secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming district tournament.
The tournament is typically hosted by the No. 1 seed, however, this year's No. 1 seed is Thompson, and construction surrounding their field has caused tournaments to be relocated.
Therefore, the honor of hosting the first round has been given to this year's No. 2 seed, New Rockford. Hillsboro will host the remainder of the tournament.
The Black Sox will enter the tournament with the wind at their backs, having won at least three games in a row since their defeat in Thompson on June 22.
On June 29, the Black Sox traveled to Nelson County, where they capitalized on a litany of errors and enjoyed strong hitting to earn the victory.
New Rockford's Weisenburger cousins were particularly strong at the plate, combining for four hits, three RBIs and two runs. Stephen Kramlich was the other primary contributor, going 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs.
Kramlich and Brody Weisenburger also pitched well on the mound, allowing just five hits between them and just two earned runs in 6.0 innings.
On defense, however, the Sox committed three errors and gave up five unearned runs. Thankfully for them, their offense was enough to overcome their defensive mistakes, securing an 11-6 Black Sox win.
Nearly a week later, the day after Independence Day, New Rockford earned a comeback victory over Hatton/Northwood for their eighth win.
While the Black Sox remained scoreless to start the game, Hatton/Northwood scored one run in each of the first three innings. All of which came via wild pitches thrown by New Rockford pitchers.
Once again, their offense, namely the Weisenburger cousins, overcame those mistakes, scoring four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth and sixth. Brody and Alex Weisenburger were responsible for four of those six runs.
Hatton/Northwood was one of only two teams that had previously defeated the Black Sox, but nearly a month later were unable to do so again.
The Black Sox traveled to Grafton for a triangular with Minto and Grafton Friday, July 8, and play Devils Lake Monday. New Rockford will then host the first round of the district tournament, which starts Wednesday, July 13. The bracket will be posted online as soon as its available.
