Cardinals flutter past Rockets

On Saturday, Jan. 29, the New Rockford-Sheyenne gymnasium hosted the Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich boys and girls varsity and junior varsity basketball teams as they competed in their annual doubleheader. The Rockets girls' varsity and junior varsity teams had no luck against the Cardinals. LA/E/M defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne 63-29, taking their 11th win of the season.

This matchup between the Cardinals and the Rockets was the final home game for the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets. Seniors Mya Cudworth and Kennedy Demester were honored before the start of the varsity girls' game. On behalf of the sports reporters at the New Rockford Transcript, congratulations on your achievements throughout your years as a Rockets' girls' basketball player. We look forward to watching you play your hearts out in the District 7 tournament on Feb. 11, 12 and 14 in Maddock.

The LA/E/M Cardinals have only lost two games this year, that being to the Kindred Vikings and the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks. With that being said, the Rockets knew this would be a tough game.

The first quarter went great for the Rockets, staying behind by only five points. But that ended abruptly. The Cardinals took a ten-point lead at the end of the first half, and they never looked back.

At the end of the third quarter, the Rockets were still only down by ten points. But with the Cardinals scoring a total of 26 points in the fourth quarter versus the Rockets' two points, there was simply no chance.

Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich freshman Meredith Romfo led the Cardinals to yet another win with a total of 18 points. Cardinal players who also scored in the double digits were Jaya Henderson with 14, Morgan Freije with 12 and Jaylynn Swanson with ten.

As for the Rockets, not a single player scored in double digits. Ava Peterson, Kelsie Belquist and Kennedy Demester all tied with a total of eight points each.

The Rockets junior varsity team also had a tough game, losing 36-61. Although the referees did make a few bad calls, even that wouldn't have helped the Rockets win.

Tillie Swart and Lora Wobbema led the Rockets with ten points each. Swart and Wobbema were the only Rockets players to score in double digits.

Olivia Christianson was the top scorer for the Cardinals with 16 points. Also scoring in double digits for the Cardinals were Claire Chaput with 15 and Romfo with 11 total points.

The scheduled game against the Drake-Anamoose Lady Raiders on Feb. 1, was postponed until Saturday, Feb. 5.

The Rockets will travel to Pingree on Monday, Feb. 7 to take on the M-P/B Thunder (A,B) starting at 6 p.m. This will be the last regular season game for the NR-S girls' basketball team before competing in the District 7 tournament in Maddock on Feb. 11, 12 and 14.
