LuVerne Hoyt, 83, of McHenry, N.D., passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, at his home.

Funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 1, 2021 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McHenry, N.D. with burial at Bethlehem Cemetery, McHenry, N.D. Deacon Tara Ulrich officiated with special music by Annola Black and Bernie Madsoe. Casket bearers were Blaine Hovland, Christopher Hovland, Wyatt Hoyt, Laine Hoyt, Levi Hoyt, Brody Hoyt and Kade Hoyt. Honorary bearers were Richard Aasand, Lester Larson and Ronald Harding. Military honors by McHenry American Legion, Post #160, and the North Dakota Army Funeral Honors Team.

LuVerne was born Aug. 28, 1938, in McVille, N.D., he was the oldest son of John and Avanelle Hoyt. He grew up in rural Forde Township, Nelson County and attended country school there until eighth grade. LuVerne worked for a local farmer and in 1956 enlisted in the U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in 1958, and was in the reserves until 1962. LuVerne married Darlene Harding on Nov. 17, 1960 in Our Saviors Lutheran Church, McHenry, N.D.

LuVerne worked for his uncle Lyle in construction for a few years before forming Hoyt Construction in 1978. LuVerne also did custom butchering for many local farmers for well over 50 years. LuVerne served on the McHenry Fire Dept. for 21 years and as a city council member for many years.

LuVerne is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Darlene; children Vonnie (Jim) Johnsrud, Darin (Kathy) Hoyt and Leon Hoyt; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Artha "Skeeter" (Harlan) Sigdahl; brother DeLane "Mugs" (Peggy) Hoyt; and sister-in-law Judy Hoyt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Milton "Smokey" and Hartley, sister-in-law Carol Hoyt and grandson Dustin Hovland.
