Obituary: Phyllis Singer

Phyllis Singer, age 84, of Valley City, N.D., died Saturday, July 31 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 20 at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home Chapel in Valley City. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home on Friday afternoon. Internment will be in the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery in Mandan, N.D.

Phyllis Jane Smith, the daughter of Charles "Nick" and Georgia (Clark) Smith, was born on May 31, 1937 in New Rockford, N.D. Phyllis grew up on the family farm near Sheyenne, N.D. where she attended a one-room country school until eighth grade. She then attended school in New Rockford, where she graduated from New Rockford High School in 1955. After her graduation, she attended Minot State Teacher's College for two years where she received her Teaching Certificate. She taught grade school in Towner and McClusky, N.D., where she met her future husband, Gene Singer. The couple was married on July 7, 1962 in McClusky and then moved to Valley City, N.D. Phyllis then attended Valley City State Teachers College where she received her teaching degree. She taught in Tower City, N.D. until she retired from her teaching career. Phyllis enjoyed deer hunting, wood carving, fishing, bowling, gardening and enjoyed a trip to casinos. She also was an avid walker putting on numerous miles around Valley City where she visited with many people.

Phyllis is survived by her sister Frances Essig, Plymouth, Minn.; a brother, Charles (Elaine) Smith, Lansdale, Pa.; an uncle, Richard (Margaret) Hedin, Spokane, Wash. and many other relatives and friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Gene.
