History of New Rockford: March 29, 2021

On Dec. 19, 1903, County Superintendent of Schools, Grace B. Putnam, came from Grand Forks for the holidays with her husband; she returned on Dec. 26. Blanche and Irene Brownell arrived from Jamestown for the holidays with their parents; they returned on Jan. 2. Lorne Ireland arrived from Canada to work as the manager of Niven’s meat market. Charles Dinnetz was in on business. Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Huff were in shopping. Frances Thomson arrived from Dickinson to spend the holidays with her parents. Jacob Allmaras returned from the Twin Cities, accompanied by his daughter, Katie. M.F. Kepner went to Carrington on business. Mr. and Mrs. Otho Lathrop moved to their ranch, northeast of the Sheyenne River, until spring. Painter, John Anderson, left for the holidays in Chicago. Frank Fahrer, who was manager for the previous two years at his brother George’s meat market, left for his old home in Lancaster, Ohio. Andrew Dodds left for a winter at his old home in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada. That evening, there was a surprise party [for whom?] at Mr. and Mrs. Bert Studebaker’s home, west of town, with dancing, music, and “an elegant lunch at midnight” for the large crowd. Also that evening, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Randolph celebrated their wooden wedding anniversary [Fifth] with friends and neighbors near McHenry; there were games, music, and “a bountiful wedding supper” at midnight. The couple received “many valuable and useful presents.”

From Dec. 19 to 21, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Johnson, Sr., were in the Twin Cities. From Dec. 19 to 22, Erick Lindstrom was in Fargo.

On the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 20, Barlow bank cashier, A.E. Swanson, came up to visit. That evening, there was a Layman’s Service at the Methodist Church, with addresses by prominent New Rockford residents, and music by the Methodist ladies and a male quartet.

On Dec. 21, Mr. and Mrs. Irv Strecher, and Mr. and Mrs. Axtle Johnson, came in to shop. Lars T. Tweet from west of New Rockford, and A.F. Prouty, were in town. E.A. Voigt was down from Oberon. B.W. Hersey was in from Tiffany to Christmas shop, and A.E. Hersey of Tiffany was in to visit and on business. John T. West came in from eastern Eddy County on business; Fred F. Allmaras, and Gabriel Guessbacher, were also in on business. Peter Prader came home from a week’s business trip to the Twin Cities and Fargo. Charles Pake returned to spend the holidays with his family. Selma Peterson of Willow City arrived to visit Dora and Lyle Yegen. Josephine Byllesby of Willow City was also in town visiting. [Miss Byllesby had taught in the New Rockford School Primary Department from Feb. 25 to May 29, 1901.] Mrs. VanDorn Gilchrist took the train to Brownsville, Minn., for a winter with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Culp and family left for the holidays with her relatives in Leeton, Johnson County, Miss.; it was Charles Culp’s first vacation in five years. Edgar Rosenberger returned to his home in Edinburg, Va., after visiting his brother Charles. J.N. and B.A. Olsen visited their brother, A.C. “Fred” Olsen, of the “Transcript” before leaving for the winter at their old Wisconsin home. Having sold his tailor shop to Arne Peterson [sic, Pederson] of Valley City, A. Scherrer left for his home in Belvidere, Ill. “Peterson” had 25 years of experience as a tailor.

On Dec. 21 and 22, J.T. Shauers of eastern Eddy County, and Mr. and Mrs. M. Cler of Tiffany were in on business and to visit.

On Dec. 22, Stutsman County Register of Deeds, John B. Fried, came up to visit Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Prader, Sr.; Mr. Fried and Mrs. Prader were brother and sister. Hugh Dudgeon was up to visit from Carrington, where his sister, former New Rockford resident, Mrs. P.J. Hester, lived. Esmond attorney, H.S. Halverson, was in New Rockford on legal business. Stephen Walsh, of eastern Eddy County, and J.L. Pisel were in Christmas shopping. A dance by the Pioneer Dancing Club, postponed from Dec. 17, was held at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 22, with a midnight meal served by James Hamilton. That evening, Adolph Samuelson and Regina Swore, both of Sheyenne, were married in the Sheyenne Opera House. Also that evening, there was a “Blue Bird” social at Captain and Mrs. P.H. West’s home, sponsored by the Epworth League.

On Dec. 22 to 23, P.J. Boyle was over from the McHenry country on business. Ferd Brueske of Wimbledon was visiting his brother William. Morris postmaster, D.D. Dailey, was in New Rockford.

On Dec. 23, H. Laverne Goodrich, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Goodrich, and Hannah Swanson were married by Rev. Neander at the home of the bride’s parents, 12 miles northwest of New Rockford. Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Borthwick of eastern Eddy County, and Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Mathews, were in Christmas shopping. M.B. Johnson, who had come to Eddy County from Buffalo, was in on business. Dennis O’Connell came down from Williston for Christmas, then he left on Dec. 28 for Deering, N.D., where he would take over an elevator on the Great Northern. Frank Fugina went to Milwaukee for the winter. Eddys Cole left for the holidays at her home in Minneapolis. George Tyner went to the Twin Cities for the holidays and then headed to the West Coast. Mr. and Mrs. Olof Lundquist, and his brother Conrad, went to Valley City for the holidays; they returned on Jan. 11. Also on Dec. 23, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Morris.

On Dec. 23 and 24, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Buck were in Barlow.

On Dec. 24, James Hamilton’s meat market and store did a “thriving business.” Daniel O’Connell returned from Williston, where he had been a grain buyer since the fall.

On Christmas Eve, the Congregational Sunday School presented Christmas entertainment. Also that evening, there was “an old fashioned Christmas tree entertainment” at the Methodist Church for the Sabbath School. That evening Lorne Ireland and Nels Myhre decorated D. Niven’s meat market for Christmas.
