Baumbach wins local Geography Bee

Students from NR-S school participated in the National Geographic Geography Bee on Jan. 23. Students in grades four through eight took part in the preliminary round in the classrooms. The top two students from each class moved on to the final round held in the Eddy County Courthouse. Parents and friends were invited to watch the competition.

The students participating in the Geography Bee included Skye Kramlich, Logan Cudworth, Lucas Yri, Kaden Hilbert, Porter Granger, Tillie Swart, Jocee Lawrence, Jesus Rodriguez, Bailey Baumbach and Trysta Thumb.

The school champion was Bailey Baumbach, who now has the chance to move on to the state level by taking a proctored online qualifying test. The top 100 ranked students in each state qualify to represent their school at the state level Geography Bee competition, which will be held in Bismarck on March 29. State champions then travel to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to compete in the national championship.

The National Geographic Bee is an annual geography competition that is organized by the National Geographic Society and originally began in 1989 to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms. Students in grades four through eight are eligible to compete in a challenging test of geographic knowledge. More than 4 million students from schools in all 50 states participate in the local contests using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society.

Students compete for cash awards and other prizes. National Geographic increased the prize money for all State Geography Bees in 2019. State champions will receive a medal, $1,000 in cash, and other prizes, as well as a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Championship. The second and third-place students at State Geography Bees will also receive cash awards of $300 and $100, respectively.

Each state champion will advance to the National Championship and compete for cash awards and college scholarships. In 2019, the national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galápagos Islands.
