AmeriCorps funds VISTA program for Spirit Lake and N.D. STEM Network

U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp announced two federal grants totaling over $157,000 in funds that will support eight AmeriCorps VISTA members with the North Dakota STEM Network and the Spirit Lake Tribe.

“North Dakotans understand the importance of public service and how to step-up in their communities to get the job done,” said Heitkamp. “This federal funding will be used to further the goals of two important projects, one on Spirit Lake and the other for the North Dakota STEM Network. The federal funding for Spirit Lake will support the work of AmeriCorps VISTA members to improve programs with a focus on improving health outcomes through education and outreach. And the federal funding for the North Dakota STEM Network will help make sure students from rural or disadvantaged communities have access to STEM opportunities. These efforts will help to provide folks throughout North Dakota with new opportunities and increase their quality of life.”

Spirit Lake Tribe received $107,057 in federal funding to support five VISTA Members who will work improve the tribe’s departments and programs to improve health outcomes by combating methamphetamine use and suicide.

The North Dakota STEM Network was awarded $50,842 in federal funding to support three VISTA Members who will work by organizing an easy-to-use clearing house to improve the North Dakota STEM Exchange program, so that students in rural and disadvantaged communities are able to easily access information on STEM opportunities.
