Rockets fall to Cardinals by two

After having to reschedule the non-district matchup versus the Washburn Cardinals from Saturday, Jan. 13 due to the frigid weather, the Rockets finally met up with the Cardinals on Saturday, Jan. 20 in Washburn.

The Rockets kept up with the Cardinals extremely well, considering the Cardinals had a 9-3 overall record.

The Rockets were the first up on the scoreboard after a drive to the basket by NR-S senior Kelsie Belquist.

Belquist made eight of the 13 points scored by the Rockets in the first quarter. The Cardinals didn’t fall too far behind, scoring a total of 12 points in the first.

The Rockets began their climb in the second quarter by taking a seven point lead over the Cardinals. Kaiya O’Connor and Lora Wobbema were big assets for the Rockets, with six points coming from O’Connor and four from Wobbema.

O’Connor came back in the third quarter to secure her third 3-pointer of the night. NR-S sophomore Ava Peterson showed up in quarter three scoring the six other points for the Rockets, with the Cardinals now trailing by eight.

Quarter four, however, did not tip in the Rockets' favor. Many missed free throws by the Rockets gave the Cardinals a fast chance to play catch up. In just the fourth quarter alone, the Rockets went 3-for-9 at the line.

With the help of Washburn players Ashlyn Schmitz and Monica Goven, the Cardinals had defeated the Rockets 46-44.

Top scorers for the Rockets were Belquist with 14, and O’Connor and Peterson with 12 points each. As for the Cardinals, Goven and Chev Obering each scored in double digits with 15 and 13, respectively.

The Rockets junior varsity team also came up short to the Cardinals, taking a 23-41 loss.

Emmie Belquist led the team in points with seven, followed by Jaida Schumacher with five. Top scorers for the Cardinals were Sadie Goven with 13 and Brooke Knutson with 10.
