The Rocket archery team started 2024 nocked and loaded at the Midkota-Kensal tournament on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Eighth grader Sawyer Huso was the top shooter in the entire tournament. He scored 288 and took home first place in the middle school boys' division and the top overall male distinction.

Koy Zieman, Huso's teammate and classmate, finished with a 279 and earned third place among middle school boys.

On the girls' side, Aubree Kukowski was the top middle school shooter for the Rockets. Her score of 265 was also good for third place among middle school girls.

Layton Jacobson is among the high school archers this season. The NR-S freshman finished second overall in the tournament. His score of 287 (one less than Huso) earned him the gold medal among high school boys.

Junior Bradyn Collier also came home with a medal. He finished with a 274 and third place among high school boys.

Three other high school boys finished in the top 10: Eli Alfstad earned sixth place with a 271; Lance Ziegler finished in ninth place with a 261; and Chaztin Wobbema was 10th overall with a 255.

The youngest Rocket archers had two top 10 finishes. Fifth grader Cordell Myhre finished 10th overall among elementary boys with a score of 222. On the girls' side, Alexa Allmaras was also 10th overall with a 203.

Other top 10 finishers for the Rockets were as follows:

Middle school girls: Raegyn Lange, fifth (255).

A total of 242 archers competed in the first tournament of the season, and more than a quarter of those archers competed for NR-S. A total of 68 Rocket archers shot their first rounds of the season in Kensal.

The Rockets competed in both 3D and bullseye at the Carrington Archery Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 27. Scores and results from Carrington will be published in the February 6 issue.

Next weekend, the Rockets host their only home archery tournament of the season. With flights on Friday night and Saturday (February 2 and 3), there are plenty of opportunities for locals to watch archery action right here in New Rockford.
