NRABC to host Youth Track Meet July 25

The New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation (NRABC) is putting together yet another exciting opportunity for local youth.

On Tuesday, July 25, the NRABC will host their-first ever youth track meet for children 12 years old and younger.

NRABC Director Amanda Hegland said kids of all abilities are invited to participate in the track meet’s events, which will include a 25-yard dash, 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash, a hurdle run, standing long jump, soft ball throw, a distance race, and if enough little ones register there will also be a “diaper derby!”

The kids will be grouped by age, and each age group will have a boys’ and a girls’ division.

The age groups will be as follows: ages 4 and under, ages 5-6, ages 7-8, ages 9-10 and ages 11-12.

The track meet will take place at North Park in New Rockford starting at 6 p.m.

The entry fee is $5 per child, and proceeds will be put towards future events for New Rockford’s youth.

Hegland said much of the event is being organized by the NRABC’s summer intern, Mya Cudworth, and that the reason for holding it is to provide a way for local youth to compete in track events without having to travel out of town, particularly with the resurgence of the track program at New Rockford-Sheyenne.

“We just want this to be a fun, safe event for kids to participate in,” said Hegland.

Concessions will also be available at the event courtesy of the New Rockford Park District, and anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and have a good time as they root for their little ones.

Those interested can register and complete a release form at the event, or they can reach out to Hegland or Cudworth ahead of the event to register early.

The most important thing is participation, said Hegland, so even if the $5 registration fee can’t be afforded the NRABC can offer a scholarship to get in.

Also, anyone interested in volunteering to help at the event, or who would like to donate some useful equipment such as stop watches, is encouraged to contact the NRABC via phone at (701) 947-2205, or at their offices in New Rockford City Hall.
