Schaefer, Alfstad prevail in NR-S school election

The votes have been tallied, and the unofficial results of New Rockford-Sheyenne's June 6 school board election have been released.

With 225 total ballots cast, the district saw – by far – the most participation for an election in years.

According to NR-S Business Manager Dave Skogen, school board elections have typically only seen around 20 to 30 voters cast a ballot in recent years.

Zachary Smith's challenge for the seat currently held by School Board Vice President Mike Schaefer made this year's election the first contested school board race since 2015.

The unofficial election results are as follows:

Incumbent Mike Schaefer captured 59 percent of the vote for the position representing the former New Rockford district. He had 132 votes, and challenger Zachary Smith received 93.

Kyle Alfstad filed for the open position representing the former Sheyenne district, and he received 212 votes. Tim Hartl and Alyson Myhre each had their names written in once.

As for the question on whether to publish school board minutes in the official newspaper, the answer was resounding yes. A total of 216 "yes" votes were cast. Only eight voted no.

The results of the election will remain unofficial until the district's canvassing board meets on Monday, June 19 – at the school board's next regular meeting – to officially canvass the election.
