Within Our Walls: June 5, 2023

This week's Within Our Walls article features Mary Hoff.

Mary Hoff is a Certified Physician Assistant who works at our Carrington Medical Clinic and Urgent Care, as well as our Family Clinic in New Rockford. She also rounds weekly at Golden Acres Manor and the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.

Mary began her medical career in 1982 when she received her Licensed Practical Nurse degree from Wahpeton State School of Science. She worked on the medical floor at Trinity Health in Minot until she received her Bachelor of Science/Registered Nurse (RN) degree from North Dakota State University in 1988.

Mary worked as an RN at St. Luke's Hospital (now Sanford Hospital) in Fargo on the Oncology and Critical Cardiac Care units.

In 1990, Mary started a new adventure as a RN at Carrington Health Center. While working at Carrington Health Center, Mary "worked her way up the border" and received her Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) degree from the University of North Dakota in 1995. During this same year, she transitioned from a RN in the hospital to a PA-C in our clinic. Mary has cared for patients in the clinic and ER for many years.

When CHI St. Alexius Health Carrington switched to the ER/Hospital role for ER and hospital patients, Mary was relieved of her need to cover ER patients along with ER calls. However, Mary is one of the first to respond when extra hands are needed anywhere in the hospital or ER.

Mary enjoys all aspects of family medicine, with obstetrics (OB) being here least favorite. Even so, she has assisted in several emergent deliveries over the years, doing a fantastic job with each one.

Other areas of family medicine that interest Mary are diabetes, women's health, the special needs population, Department of Transportation (DOT) exams, and health maintenance. These interest areas allow her to "put the whole picture together" and provide thorough and comprehensive care to her patients.

Mary stays active within our community, and the surrounding communities, through her involvement with the Bowdon Ambulance Service, Carrington Lions, Carrington Health Center Auxiliary and the Out of the Darkness Walk.

When Mary is not working, she enjoys spending as much time as she can with her three children and her four grandchildren. She states they are her pride and joy.
