Swingin' for State

At the second individual qualifier this season, NR-S freshman Jackson Schumacher punched his ticket to state golf.

In the process, he also earned his lowest score yet this season and nearly took first place from one of the best high school golfers in North Dakota.

The qualifier took place on Friday, May 19 at the CrossRoads Gold Club in Carrington, where par for the course was 72.

With a score of 73, Schumacher finished just a single point over par and tied for first place with Central Cass sophomore Jake Thompson, who also scored a 73. However, a tiebreaker meant Schumacher would have to settle for second place on the official score sheet.

More importantly, however, Schumacher's performance was more than enough to qualify for state, which will take place from June 6-7 at the Bois de Sioux Golf Course in Wahpeton, N.D.

The stellar outing comes after Schumacher fell short of state qualifying at the first individual qualifier in Mapleton, due to an unfortunate front nine. The mark for state qualifying was 79, and Schumacher had scored an 89.

But the best always bounce back, and with his performance in Carrington Schumacher became the first NR-S golfer to qualify for state golf since Benjamin Schaefer accomplished the feat in 2019.

Adding to Schumacher's impressive accomplishment was that after he finished state qualifying, he traveled to Rugby and qualified for state track in the men's 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:10.38.

But despite Schumacher's exceptional outing, Rockets' golf as a whole struggled to climb the leaderboards in Carrington.

Shaun Reimche scored 97, Kage Walford scored 108 and Jacob Louters scored 112, putting them in 45th, 49th and 51st overall, respectively, out of 54 golfers in attendance.

As a team, NR-S scored 313 combined points, too high to finish any better than ninth place out of 10 teams.

Taking first place at the meet was Central Cass, who scored a combined 313 points.

On Wednesday, May 24, NR-S golf attended another meet at the Cottonwood Golf Club in Casselton, ahead of the Region 2 team-qualifier on Wednesday, May 31 at the CrossRoads Golf Club in Carrington.
