Kukowski leads JH tricksters at Devils Lake meet

On Tuesday, May 16, the New Rockford-Sheyenne junior high track and field team made the 47 mile trek to Devils Lake to compete in the final junior high meet of the season.

NR-S eighth grader, Malaki Kukowski, was quite successful at the meet. In the eighth grade boys' division, Kukowski took first place in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and long jump. Along with these three first-place finishes, Kukowski ran as the anchor in the eighth grade boys' 4x100-meter relay team alongside Kolton O'Connor, Thaddison Wobbema and Aaden Benson. The relay team took first place by 27 hundredths of a second with a time of 54.68 seconds.

O'Connor, Benson and T. Wobbema were also top placers for the boys' team.

O'Connor took second place in boys' shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 1 inch and third place in discus with a throw of 97-9. Benson on the other hand competed in the boys' 100-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter hurdles.

Benson took third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.54, fourth place in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 35.32 seconds and sixth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.61.

T. Wobbema competed in the boys' 800-meter run and finished in fourth place with a time of 2:56.37.

Other top placers for the eighth grade boys' team were Chaztin Wobbema and Dustin Nystrom.

C. Wobbema competed in discus and shot put and took fourth place in discus with a throw of 95-9 and ninth place in shot put with a throw of 29-3.

Nystrom competed in the 400-meter dash and took seventh place overall with a time of 1:17.30.

The eighth grade boys' team took second place overall with a total of 80 points.

As for the eighth grade girls' team, Kaci Weisenburger and Jocee Lawrence were the only girls to compete. Weisenburger took third place in the girls' long jump event with a jump of 12-3 and ninth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.76 seconds. Lawrence on the other hand threw a personal record of 23-11 in girls' shot put to put her in seventh place.

The eighth grade girls' team took seventh place with a total of eight points.

Only three seventh grade athletes competed for the Rockets: Isla Jacobson, Jax Demester and Alex Knatterud.

Isla Jacobson took second place in the girls' 800-meter run with a time of 2:54.88, fifth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 32.46 seconds and seventh place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.56 seconds.

Demester competed in the boys' long jump event, 200-meter dash and the 100-meter dash. Overall, Demester took sixth place in long jump with a jump of 12-8, sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 31.65 seconds and eighth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.76 seconds.

Knatterud competed alongside Demester in the 200-meter dash and long jump events. Overall, Knaterud took eighth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 32.16 seconds and 10th place in long jump with a jump of 11-9.5.

The boys' seventh grade team took eighth place with a total of eight points. The seventh grade girls' team took ninth place with 13.5 points.

Congratulations to all the junior high athletes on a great track season. Just at this meet alone, 24 personal records were set. A great achievement for all!
