Hitting a rough patch

NR-S golfers fall short at Cooperstown, Mapleton

On Tuesday, May 16, New Rockford-Sheyenne golfers traveled to Mapleton for their first individual state qualifier.

Not all would go to plan for the Rockets, however.

The team's best golfer, Jackson Schumacher, didn't have the greatest front nine as he scored 14 over par. The difficult start meant that his much-improved back nine result – three over par – wasn't quite enough to qualify for state.

Schumacher finished the meet with an overall score of 89.

Par for the Maple River Golf Course in Mapleton was 72.

Schumacher's score placed him 28th of 56 golfers at the event, but he finished first among his team.

Next on the board for NR-S golf were Kage Walford and Dashyl Bichler. Walford earned a score of 96 while Bichler finished just behind with a score of 97, placing them in 38th and 39th, respectively.

Shaun Reimche, meanwhile, scored a 101 and finished in 43rd place.

The Rockets team as a whole placed eighth out of 10 teams at the event with a combined score of 383. Taking first place was Central Cass with a combined score of 311.

Earlier in the week, on Friday, May 12, the New Rockford-Sheyenne golf team traveled to Cooperstown for their third event of the season.

Par for the Cooperstown Golf Course was also 72, and once again the Rockets struggled.

Schumacher was the team's best finisher with a score of 91, which put him in 30th place out of 56 golfers. Just behind was Dashyl Bichler, who finished in 32nd with a score of 93.

Ashton and Shaun Reimche earned 45th and 47th place with scores of 103 and 106, respectively.

Central Cass junior Cole Holzer took first place with a score of 68.

The Rockets as a whole scored 393 and finished in ninth place out of 10 teams, and taking home the top prize (again) was Central Cass with a score of 292.

The two events in Mapleton and Cooperstown are in stark contrast to their first two events.

During the team's first outing at the Lakeview Golf Course, the team finished with a combined score of 334, good enough for fifth place out of 10 teams in attendance.

At their second outing in Oxbow, the Rockets scored a 393 and took seventh place out of 10 teams.

Leading the way at both events was Jackson Schumacher, who earned a fifth place at Detroit Lakes and finished 13th in Oxbow, each time out of 58 total golfers.

Despite none of the NR-S golfers managing to qualify for state in Mapleton, they had another chance in Carrington. The NR-S golf team was at the Crossroads Golf Club in Carrington on Friday, May 19, which was another individual qualifier.

The results from that meet will be covered in the next edition of the Transcript.

Beyond the Carrington meet, the golf team will be at the region 2 team qualifier at the CrossRoads Golf Club on May 31, but not before attending a meet on May 24 at the Cottonwood Golf Club in Casselton.
