Street project resumes

Construction season has arrived, and New Rockford is once again abuzz with the sounds of heavy machinery and road work.

Early last week, crews began grading alleyways and gravel streets in town, and some roads were closed on Wednesday as the large milling machine was once again trundling down New Rockford's streets.

The work is part of New Rockford's ongoing street improvement project. The project was supposed to conclude last fall, but as winter approached there were still a number of areas that hadn't been completed.

So, construction crews have returned to finish what they started.

Wade Senger of Interstate Engineering said the goal is to have everything completed by the 4th of July.

That includes grading and resurfacing every gravel road and alleyway in town, as well as milling and paving the truck route and the paved roads east of Hwy. 281.

Senger said crews were hoping to finish grading and to begin resurfacing gravel roads and alleys by the end of last week.

Meanwhile, the milling machine is removing the surface of New Rockford's streets.

Crews will begin paving those streets once the milling process is complete, and eventually the project will be finalized with a chip seal on all paved roads to prevent future deterioration.

Because the project was expected to wrap up last year, Bituminous Paving will be assessed a $1,500 per day penalty for liquidated damages.
