To win, or to be winded

by Kyrie Dauenhauer

The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity track and field team pushed through the wind to compete at the Mariya Tate Memorial Meet in Rugby on Saturday, April 29.

Even with the 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts and 31 other teams competing, the Rockets succeeded in many events.

The girls' relay teams all completed their relays in state-qualifying times, earning two first-place finishes and one second-place finish. Katie Allmaras, Jaida Schumacher, Kelsie Belquist and Emmie Belquist made up both the 4x100-meter relay team and the 4x400-meter relay team. Both relays took first place, with a time of 52.12 seconds in the 4x100 and a time of 4:15.51 in the 4x400. K. Allmaras, K. Belquist, E. Belquist and Ava Peterson made up the girls' 4x200-meter relay team that fell short of first place by 15 milliseconds to the Bottineau relay team, with a time of 1:50.43.

K. Belquist also secured a first-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a state-qualifying time of 14.89 seconds.

E. Belquist and Peterson also placed in the top ten in individual events. Peterson threw a personal record of 105 feet, 10.5 inches in javelin to take second place behind Trista Bilden of Hatton-Northwood, who took first place with a throw of 109-6.

E. Belquist competed in the girls' long jump event and took third place overall with a jump of 15-10. Rugby jumpers, Peyton Hauck and Hallie Hauck, took first and second place, respectively.

Overall, the NR-S girls' team took fifth place with a total of 52 points. The Carrington Cardinals topped all with a score of 92.5 points, to take first place.

Just like the girls' team, the Rocket boys' relay teams were outstanding. DJ Mudgett, Trevor Waldo, Connor Knatterud and Easton Benz made up the boys' 4x100-meter relay team that took second place with a time of 46.26. The Rugby team, made up of Cy Walker, Cole Fahnestock, Logan Gronvold and William Lundberg were only steps ahead to take first place with a state-qualifying time of 45.90 seconds.

Waldo, Benz, Knatterud and Bennett Meier ran the 4x200-meter relay and took third place with a time of 1:38.91. The Benson County relay team took second place with a time of 1:37.81 while the Carrington team, made up of Ty Johnston, Ryder Bickett, Jaxon Schaefer and McKade Zink took first place with a time of 1:37.26.

Knatterud, Benz, Waldo, Mudgett and Meier were all top-10 placers in individual events for the boys' team.

Waldo and Meier both competed in the boys' high jump event and took second and ninth place, respectively. Knatterud blazed past competitors in the 100-meter dash to take third place with a time of 11.66 seconds.

Mudgett threw a personal record of 40-1 in shot put to take eighth place overall. And last, but not least, Benz competed in the boys' 400-meter dash and placed 10th with a time of 58.00 seconds. Logan Weninger of Carrington took first place with a time of 52.36, just milliseconds shy of state-qualifying.

The boys' team placed eighth with a total of 29 points. The Rugby boys' team secured first place with 109 points, with Carrington following behind in second with 84 points.

As of press time, the Rockets were set to compete in Rugby on Thursday, May 4 in the Hanneman Memorial Meet.

On Friday, May 5 and Saturday May 6, eight NR-S athletes were selected to compete at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays meet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Those athletes are Kelsie Belquist, Ava Peterson, Emmie Belquist, Jaida Schumacher, Connor Knatterud, Porter Granger, Trevor Waldo and Easton Benz.

Also on Saturday, May 6, the Rockets traveled to Carrington to compete at the Kiwanis/Lions Meet.

These three meets will be covered in the May 15 edition of the New Rockford Transcript.
