Junior high Rockets soar in Hazen

On Monday, April 24, junior high tracksters from New Rockford-Sheyenne made the trek to Hazen to compete in the junior high Hazen meet.

In the eighth grade girls’ events, Emmie Belquist was the star of the show, bringing home three first place finishes. Belquist competed in the 200-meter dash, the 200-meter hurdles and long jump.

Also taking first place for the eighth grade girls were the 4x100-meter and the 4x200-meter relay teams. The relay teams were made up by Beth Becker, Kaci Weisenburger, Karsyn Wetzel and Jaida Schumacher.

The eighth grade NR-S girls took fifth place overall with a total of 50 points.

As for the eighth grade boys’ side, the boys’ 4x200-relay team, made up by Kolton O’Connor, Layton Jacobson, Chaztin Wobbema and Malaki Kukowski, took first place with a time of 1:56.45.

The NR-S boys’ 4x100-meter relay team, made up by Sawyer Huso, O’Connor, Kukowski and Thomas Allmaras, took second place behind Southern McLean with a time of 52.88 seconds.

Kukowski also competed in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash, where he took second and seventh, respectively. Allmaras competed alongside Kukowski in the 400-meter dash and took third place overall. Allmaras also competed in the 200-meter dash and long jump, where he earned fourth and third place, respectively.

Other top 10 placers were Layton Jacobson, Kason Nass and O’Connor.

Jacobson took third place in shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 10 inches and 10th in discus with a throw of 72-7. O’Connor also competed in both shot put and discus, where he took ninth place in shot put with a throw of 29-9- and eighth in discus with a throw of 85 -7.

Nass was the lone NR-S high jumper for the eighth graders. Nass took fifth place overall with a jump of 4-2.

The NR-S eighth grade boys took third place overall with a total of 56 points.

Moving onto the NR-S seventh grade teams:

Jaida Schumacher led the girls’ team with first place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.

Becker competed in the 100-meter dash alongside Schumacher and took third place overall. Becker also competed in the 200-meter dash, where she finished in fifth place with a time of 32.78 seconds.

Isla Jacobson was the only other seventh grade girl to place in the top 10. Jacobson earned fourth place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:50.58 and fifth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:14.40.

The girls’ seventh grade team took sixth place overall with a total of 45 points.

Top placer for the seventh grade NR-S boys team was Sawyer Huso, who finished in second place in long jump with a jump of 15-5. Huso also took sixth place in the 200-meter dash and took ninth place in the 100-meter dash.

The seventh grade boys’ took 12th place overall with a total of 11 points.
