NR-S Music shines across state

The musicians at New Rockford-Sheyenne High School have impressed audiences across the state throughout the past month.

On Friday, March 24, the NR-S Concert Choir performed in front of music educators all across the state at the North Dakota Music Educators Association Conference. Schools apply for the opportunity to showcase their talent, and this year NR-S rose to the top with their vocals.

Then last week, the NR-S musicians headed to Valley City for the Region 5 Solo and Ensemble Contest. They prepared 19 pieces for the contest held at Valley City State University on Wednesday, April 12, and 12 of their performances received a "Star" rating and qualified for the state competition at Minot State University on May 6.

Further, NR-S earned three of the four "Outstanding Performance Awards" issued by the judges. A list of the state-qualifying performances and Outstanding Performance Award winners are listed below.

• Mixed Vocal Ensemble – "You Are My Music" performed by Mark McDowell, Hallie Brown, Lucy Meier, Trysta Thumb, Kelsie Belquist, Kyria Dockter, Kotone Maeda, Alexa Anderson, Emma Duda, Katie Allmaras and Claire Becker

• Miscellaneous Mixed Vocal Ensemble – "Truth" performed by Kelsie Belquist, Hallie Brown, Katie Allmaras and Mark McDowell

• Soprano/Alto vocal ensemble – "The Sea" performed by Hallie Brown and Kyria Dockter (Outstanding Performance Award)

• Soprano/Alto vocal ensemble – "In the Dark of Midnight" by Kyria Dockter, Bailey Baumbach, Abby Nystrom and Emma Duda

• Soprano solo – "An die Musik" performed by Hallie Brown (Outstanding Performance Award)

• Percussion ensemble – "Duet #1" snare drum duet performed by Jacob Louters and Vinnie Ruppell

• Percussion ensemble – "The Entertainer" performed by Katie Allmaras, Hallie Brown, Claire Becker, Vinnie Ruppell, Jacob Louters, Bailey Baumbach, Emma Duda, Tillie Swart, Abby Nystrom and Kotone Maeda

• Mixed woodwind ensemble – "Rondeau" performed by Tillie Swart, Andrew Storstad and Addison Wallace

• Mixed Instrument ensemble – "7th Symphony" performed by Emma Duda, Katie Allmaras, Bailey Baumbach and Addison Wallace

• Flute ensemble – "Sonatina" performed by Hallie Brown and Claire Becker

• Flute ensemble – "Andante Grazioso" performed by Hallie Brown, Claire Becker and Abby Nystrom (Outstanding Performance Award)

• Tuba solo – "Romance" performed by Donavun McCorkle
