Peter and Patti Larson recently returned from a trip to Norway and Sweden. They met up with their daughters, Joanna and Sandra, in Bergen, Norway on March 2. The picturesque harbor, beautifully preserved wooden houses on the steep hillsides and a stone fortress, standing proud since the Middle Ages, were the first sights they saw after the overnight flight from Grand Forks through Minneapolis and Amsterdam.

Sightseeing on a train ride to Flam on Friday included Norwegian countryside, ski slopes, frozen waterfalls and fjords. Lots of slate roofs and red houses!

Day three they walked all over Oslo, the capital of Norway, seeing a sculpture park, palace, opera house, and museum.

Then they flew to Sweden, toured the Swedish University of Agriculture Science campus in Uppsala, where Joanna is attending graduate school.

Peter met with students and a professor as part of a group project related to integrated weed management solutions for herbicide resistant kochia.

Then in Stockholm, they saw more impressive palaces, museums and markets. It is a beautiful city on the water; they spent two nights on a docked boat turned hostel.

It snowed the day they toured the Royal Institute of Technology and Engineering in Stockholm, Europe's leading tech and engineering university, where Sandra took one semester to study abroad from the University of Minnesota.

Realizing again why people from North Dakota like to take warm vacations in the winter, they headed to southern Sweden. The highlight of the trip was the visit to the small island town of Ivo, the place Peter's grandfather and three of his brothers left behind to come to America for the opportunity for a better life. The land was VERY rocky ... miles of rock fences, hills and trees. Would have been tough to farm with all those rocks! Orchards and vineyards have turned the quaint small community into a destination winery, complete with bed and breakfast. They enjoyed the drive through the farmland to Malmo and Copenhagen. On March 10, they flew back to Grand Forks through Paris and Minneapolis.

Jan Loe and Steph were in Jamestown on Monday, March 20. On Wednesday, March 22, Jan and Steph went to Grand Forks where they met Jim and Marjean Woodrow and Pam Hill at Olive Garden for a family March birthdays’ lunch.

Jeff and Denise Labrensz had an enjoyable weekend in Jamestown with Matt and Allison Pfeiffer and boys. They enjoyed the pool, meal times, visiting and especially the family time together.

Sunday evening, Sheyenne GRIT met at the Sheyenne Senior Center. The meeting included discussion/clarification of the bylaws of GRIT, approval of the Community Credit Union checking account and designated signees, discussion on the various committees and upcoming events for the community as well as projects of the group to be worked on in the coming months.

Bonnie Deegan and Jan Loe drove to Devils Lake on Monday. They went to Mr. & Mrs. J's for lunch where they found Barb Eversvik and Colleen Hanson and joined them for lunch. Bonnidfe and Jan did a little shopping before returning home.
