If I Were Mayor Essay Contest 2023

Third grade students at New Rockford-Sheyenne School were asked: “Why is your city great? What makes it special?” and “What would you do to improve your city if you were mayor?”

All the essays were submitted to the North Dakota League of Cities’ If I Were Mayor Essay Contest 2023. Winners will be announced during City Government Week. Arilynn Gehrtz

My city is great because we have so many great people and helpful people. I love the way teachers teach. All the people that work so hard to provide for all of us. All so for the people that died working with us like Dennis Gehrtz. He helped working with bees, mowed the grass by the football field and more.

I would salt the roads and plant more organic food for stores. I would donate to schools and make sure that everyone is happy. I would clean up garbage around town and protect our community and homes. I would build new homes for new people to join our little community and make a shelter for animals to go to when they are lost.I’d let the people think of ideas for what we could do for our community.

Brielle Dauenhauer

Our community helps and works together to make our community better.

I would help raise money for the movie theater and help get more money to build a new gym for the New Rockford rockets. Also I would get more equipment at the rainbow park and move the swings closer to the equipment. I would love to have a Ice cream shop. Also I would make the swimming pool a water park and add 500 slides.

Theodore Harrison

My city is great because it is nice and clean. They clean the dirt and leaves off the street. They also plow the snow off the street. We have fun parks.

I could clean the trash. I could clean the ocean. I could clean the yard. I could clean the field. I can clean the school.

Khloe Wallace

All of the builders help by cleaning the roads and fixing the roads. People like me pick up trash and throw it away and I know you can too. All of the stores feed us and help us so we don’t starve and they care for us too.

I would get people that want to help me. I would have roads that would have no snow. I would help the poor if they are hungry or thirsty. I would help the animals that can’t move or walk. I would help the animals get home or take them to the shelter.

Jaxson Buck

My city is great because they’re are good people in New Rockford. Take your mom and dad for example. They’re very funny and very nice and very helpful too. Take one of your friends for example. Same thing, they’re very funny and very nice and very helpful. That is why my city is great and special.

I would like to improve my town with more people and more places. Take the movie theater for example. It fell down, so I want two or three movie theaters. This time I’ll take people from Devils Lake for example. I want people from Devils Lake to come here. That’s what I want to improve if I were mayor. But I’m not so yeah.

Benny Risovi

This city is great because people are kind and thoughtful and hard working.

I would build a miny miny mall where the dentist was. We should turn the big daddys gas station to burger king. Oh and add an arcade in the basement.

Judi Gudmunson

It is small. I know where everything is. I also think it is special because of everything in it. It has a lot of awesome toys. It has a lot of yummy snacks. It has doritos in it. It has Jeremy.

I would build three movie theaters because I want to make sure the movie theater will not break. I would also make a Mcdonalds because that is one of my favourite places on earth. I would make a baby/toy shop so people don’t drive an hour to Jamestown or Carrington just to get toys for their kids. I would make it so it has more doritos because they are yummy. I would make it to where a bunch of places were dorito stores and pizza places. I would have everybody have really cool dorito themed cars or pizza themed cars or dorito pizza themed cars. I would also make a candy store so everyone can get candy. I would also make a Walmart so there are a lot of people in NewRockford. I would make the town bigger so there is a bunch of room for people to live in. I would also make a beach for people to relax. I would also make a HUGE motel with a HUGE pool!

Tate Larson

What makes my city special is the Garbage man and mailman. Also what makes my city great is New Rockford cafe. Also Loco Ketchup cafe and ice cream shop.

I would add another grocery store so people don’t have to go to the same store. And another Bakers Dozen and this one will be open every day. I would also build a car dealership so people wouldn’t have to go to Devils lake to get a car. Also I would build a new movie theater. I would also build a bigger library. I would also build more houses for more people to live in. I would also salt the roads so they would not be slippery. I’d build another motel for truckers from a different state.

Livi Skogen

I’m a third grader from New Rockford. Some great things about New Rockford are that New Rockford is a small town so we know everybody. We have a perfect little town. New Rockford has everything we need.

If I were mayor, I would have a lemonade stand fundraiser for our movie theater because the roof fell in and now we can’t watch movies in it. The fundraiser would be in the summer because it would be too cold in the winter. I want to help our theater because it is a very historical building. I would build the new theater in an empty lot by the football field so we could watch movies instead of watching football when our parents want to. THE END.

Levi Greiner

I’m a third grader from New Rockford. Some great things about New Rockford is that everyone is super kind and thoughtful. The kids are nice and fun.

If I were Mayor, I would improve the size of the school so more kids could learn. The school is shaped like an E. We could enclose the extra space. We could make them hallways and rooms. And I would add more plants for the freshness and we could put them in the parks.
