A great start

Although spring may not be here, track and field season is back.

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets traveled to the Turtle Mountain Reservation to compete in the Belcourt Indoor meet on Tuesday, March 21.

Both the girls' and boys' teams placed second overall out of the six teams to compete.

Let's start off with the girls' events.

If any NR-S fans heard the song that starts off with "She's a runner, she's a track star...," you'd think of NR-S junior, Kelsie Belquist.

Belquist secured three first-place finishes in the 55-meter dash, the 55-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash, and a first place finish in the 4x200-meter relay with Lucy Meier, Katie Allmaras and Emmie Belquist.

The girls' 4x400-meter relay team, which is made up of Meier, Ava Peterson, Allmaras and E. Belquist also took home first place with a time of 4:40.13.

Second place finishers for the girls' team were Meier in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.71 seconds and Trysta Thumb in shot put with a throw of 28'0".

Allmaras brought home third place in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash.

Now for the boys' results.

The Rockets added a new face to the boys' team this year: NR-S senior, Trevor Waldo.

Waldo placed well for his first meet, with fifth place in the 55-meter dash and fourth place in both the 200-meter dash and high jump. Waldo also ran alongside Porter Granger, Bradyn Collier and Connor Knatterud in the 4x200-meter relay, which placed second behind the Devils Lake team.

Knatterud took second place in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Also placing second for the Rockets was DJ Mudgett in shot put with a throw of 39'1" and Granger in high jump with a jump of 5'6".

The Rockets competed in the NDSU Class B Indoor on Saturday, March 25. This meet will be covered in the April 3 edition of the Transcript.
