Kramlich competes at state wrestling

The stage once again wasn’t too big for senior Trace Hoggarth to shine.

The CHS senior 120-pounder took a 7-2 victory over Lisbon’s Noah Anderson to capture his second consecutive state individual title at the State Class B Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday and Friday, February 16-17, at the Fargodome.

Hoggarth finished the year with a 44-3 record, getting a first-round pin, and decision wins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to advance to the title match.

Three other Cardinals earned state placings, and helped lead the team to 60 team points and a 10th-place finish.

Sophomore Corbin Clifton (40-16 final record) won four of his five matches to take third place at 138 pounds, and the Cards’ other senior, 152-pounder Kael Kovar, put the finishing touches on a 43-13 season by going 4-2 and placing fifth.

Dru Carr (113), another sophomore, was matched up with eventual state champion Charlie Irwin of New Salem-Almont in round one, falling by pin. In spite of that, the unseeded wrestler got three straight wins to make the placement rounds, and had a very-respectable sixth-place finish with a 3-3 mark. He would end his 2022-23 campaign at 31-24.

Additional state qualifiers were Skye Kramlich (106), Nic Garber (126), Max Ciubotareanu (170) and Callen Garber (195).

In the team race, New Salem-Almont ended Lisbon’s six-year reign as Class B champions, winning their first-ever title with 193 points to the Broncos’ 164. The Holsteins had five championship match qualifiers, winning three of those titles.

South Border was just 12 points behind Lisbon in third (152), followed distantly by Velva (111) and Minot Bishop Ryan (96) in the top five.
