Indians spoil senior night in New Rockford

On Friday, Feb. 17, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets hosted the Four Winds/Minnewauken Indians and recognized their graduating seniors.

Ahead of the final regular season home game of their high school careers, NR-S seniors Haydon Meier and Trevor Waldo stood center court and received recognition for senior night. And for the first time this season, both were on the starting lineup.

Throughout most of the season, Meier had been recovering from a fractured leg suffered during last year's football season. Recently he managed to start playing limited minutes on b-squad, and on Friday night, he could finally make his long-awaited return to varsity basketball.

Unfortunately for the Rockets, however, the FW/M Indians had no intention of giving Meier or Waldo a memorable senior night victory.

At the time, the Indians were ranked No. 1 in the state and hadn't lost a single game all season long.

FW/M junior, Deng Deng, was particularly dominant. At 6'4" tall and well-built, he had his way with the comparatively undersized defenders attempting to stand in his way. Deng ended the night with a game-high 24 points.

The Rockets, meanwhile, struggled offensively, and couldn't manage to score double-digits in any of the four quarters that night. DJ Mudgett led the team in scoring eight points, followed closely by Kailar Jacobson with seven.

At halftime, NR-S was already losing by a score of 14-46, making the rest of the night largely a formality. Roughly half way through the fourth quarter, the Indians put in their bench players, followed shortly after by the Rockets.

The game ended with a dominant 81-26 Indians' victory.

The Rockets played their final regular season game on Friday, Feb. 24 against Dakota Prairie in McVille. Shortly after, they also competed in a play-in for the regional tournament. Those matchups will be covered in the next edition of the Transcript.
